THORAT SUSPENDED: Deputy Superintendent of Police and sub divisional
police officer (Panjim), Shirish Thorat, was suspended on Monday
following an inquiry by the Home department. Sources in the Secretariat
confirmed that the officer had been indicted after the inquiry
into the alleged misconduct by the gazetted officer against a
city hotelier. (H)
CLAMPDOWN
ON MATKA: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has blown the bugle
of war against "matka" by stating that his government
will clamp on the menace by taking recourse to all legal and administrative
measures. The chief minister out-rightly blamed the police force
for overlooking matka in all nooks and corners of the State and
warned that in future erring policemen will have to face stringent
action, including suspension. (GT)
VEGETABLES
FOR EXPORTS: The State government would soon undertake a project
on pilot basis wherein agricultural areas would be allotted to
the local farmers for carrying out community vegetable farming
with a view to export the produce to the foreign countries. Talking
to the Navhind Times, the Director of Agriculture, Mr Waman Khade
said, "If the project turns out to be successful, it could
be applied on long-term and wider commercial basis." (NT)
HUSBAND
DIES, WIFE CRITICAL: One Cajetan D'Costa (39) of Guirdolim died
while his wife Flory is admitted in a serious condition at the
GMC. According to Maina Curtorim Police the decease was traveling
on his Scooty home along with his wife when a Maruti van, driven
by Milagres Mascarenhas (77) had a head on collision at Curtorim.

CONVERGE: Thirty-five bishops representing 25 dioceses from different
parts of the country will participate in a four-day animation
programme by the Pontifical Mission Societies for Bishops at the
Caritas Holiday Home in Panjim from November 19. The sessions
will be focused on the proclamation of the Good News in the Indian

STILL TENSE: The Chikangal ward in Shiroda was still tense on
Monday following the death of 14-year-old Socorro Vaz, with the
relatives refusing to take possession of the body on completion
of the autopsy, even as Ponda police registered a case of murder.
Police has intensified its manhunt for the prime accused Gurudas

GIRLS MEET WATERY GRAVE: Gloom descended in the sleepy village
of Naqueri-Betul on Monday after two minor girls belonging to
migrant labour class families met a watery grave in an old, water-filled
quarry on the plateau yesterday afternoon. (H)

is hit by a resource crunch and uncertainty, the status of persons
to be displaced by the dam is even worse as they are caught in

MOTORCYCLE PILOTS: The Department of Transport is to crack the
whip against motorcycle taxi riders operating in the State without
valid permits issued by the department, following complaints from
the Goa Motor Cycle Taxi Rider's Union about the illegal operations

COLLISION: A 27-year-old person, Budam Shaikh, died on the spot,
while two others sustained injuries when a tanker and a truck
collided with each other at Zorint, Sancoale on Monday morning.

SEIZED: Acting on a tip-off, the Colva police nabbed Shamlal Goverdan
Lal, a resident of Himachal Pradesh, and seized from him charas
weighing around 6.71 grams and worth around Rs.60,000, at Sernabatim-Colva

ARRESTED: The Calangute police yesterday arrested an Iranian national,
Aliza Sharam, aged about 29, at Baga, for overstaying in the country.

WOMAN ROBBED: Julia Fernandes, a woman from Varca, was robbed
of her gold ornaments worth about Rs.28,000 while she was in the
process of purchasing earrings at a goldsmith shop in Margao on

FISHERY RESOURCES WORKSHOP: The National Institute of Oceanography,
Dona Paula, will organise a workshop on "Coastal Fishery
Resources Management of Goa" from 20 to 22 November. A team
from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation,
Australia, led by Dr Stephen Blaber, will participate in the workshop.

ON GOA'S LIBERATION: Mumbai-based film-maker Ramesh Deo's film
on Goa's Liberation movement was screened on Monday for a preview.
The nearly hour-long film encapsulates the various pro-nationalist
movements during the Portuguese regime including the Cuncolim
revolt, the Pinto's revolt and the activities of Tristao Braganza
Cunha, the Azad Gomantak Dal, etc. (H)

AGNELO'S FEAST: The 10 days of prayer at the feet of Venerable
Agnelo at Pilar will reach a fitting climax, when Archbishop Malcom
Ranjit from Rome will be the main celebrant at the concelebrated
High Mass to celebrate the 74th death anniversary of Fr Agnelo
on November 20 at 9.15 am. (H)

FR AGNELO: When the villagers of his (Fr Agnelo de Souza) wanted
to repair the dilapidated chapel of St John the Baptist in Anjuna,
Fr Agnelo was opposed to the idea saying that it would be better
to spend the amount to build a home for the poor. When asked where
they could get the additional money for its maintenance, Fr Agnelo
replied that he was ready to beg from house to house to keep the

ASIA'S
LARGEST PARISH: Asia's largest parish, Our Lady of Holy Rosary
Church, Navelim, will be celebrating its annual feast on November
20. This parish has round 32,000 parishioners, who will celebrate
the feast with religious pomp and gaiety. As per the records,
this church was ransacked by Sambhaji's men on April 25, 1717,
and only January 12, 1739, by the Maratha Vencotto Bau, brother-in-law
of Peshwa Baji Rao. (NT)
MARIO
FOR BRAZIL, CUBA: Well-known Goan cartoonist, Mario Miranda, will
be touring Cuba and Brazil on a month-long visit in February-March.
Miranda has been invited by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations,
in collaboration with the Indian Consulate of Sao Paulo, Brazil,
and the Indian Embassy in Cuba. During his stay, he will make
drawings on the life and landscape in the two countries and bring
them for exhibition in Goa. (NT)

EKVOTT CELEBRATES CHILDREN'S DAY: Children's Day celebrations
on 17th November took off on a lively note. A Sound and Light
Show brought Goa to the stage, which was then taken over by the
tiny tots and teenagers alike in a splash of colour and beautiful
costumes.They regaled the audience with the Portuguese March,
"Corredinho", "Coti" and Goan folk dances
and songs besides a solo traditional Indian number. United by
a common past and a common destiny, they tried to create a mini
Goa away from home. Maxwell Pereira, Jt. Commissioner of Police,
Traffic, sang along with great gusto the Goan folk songs. Shripad
Naik, Hon. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and the
Chief Guest, encouraged them to continue with their efforts to
keep the Goan culture alive.The crowd then moved over to the recently
inaugurated Goa Stall to enjoy the evening with traditional Goan
