Congressmen stage demonstrations
NEW
DELHI, MAY 18. The Delhi police today detained several Congress
workers who were staging demonstrations across the Capital, protesting
against the party president, Sonia Gandhi's decision not to accept
the post of Prime Minister. According to the Joint Commissioner
of Police (New Delhi Range), Maxwell Pereira, some party workers
were detained when they reached the Bharatiya Janata Party headquarters
on Ashoka Road this evening. "They wanted to demonstrate
in front of the office, but the police dispersed the crowd and
detained some of them under Section 65 of the Delhi Police Act,"
Mr. Pereira said. Police had to detain some workers outside 10
Janpath as well when they tried to prevent Ms. Gandhi from going
to Parliament where she was scheduled to address the party MPs
in the evening. Another group was detained when it marched to
the house of the senior BJP leader, Sushma Swaraj, in Lodhi Estate
to protest against her remarks against Ms. Gandhi.
