Indian call centres facing competition from SA

Call centres in Britain's northeast region have seen job losses with firms outsourcing work to India, but now another contender for the same work is South Africa.

There are fears in the region that South Africa could also become a viable alternative, with South African firms announcing plans to come and get business from the UK by organising a road show.

The skill base in South Africa is also said to be higher than in India.

In India, night-shift workers are needed to service the UK but South Africa does not have this problem.

The Butterfly Effect
Saw The Butterfly Effect yesterday, cool concept. It got a rating of 7 and its worth every dollar.

Hero got a special ability to go back to the future and change the things that happened. He is usually not happy with the happennings in life and so goes back and changes an event in life, but everytime he changes an event, that gets rippled through out the life and somthing really bad happens to him or his family/friends which he does not again like. He kind of goes back and changes life incidents i guess about 5 times.

Finally at the end of the movie he goes back and changes an event in his life and everything remains good, ofcourse there is some thing that goes back, but that bad is still good thing to happen. Watch the movie for that.

Well, to guys from India out there, what I would suggest is that you see the movie and make a concept in the same lines suitable to India and take it to Ram Gopal Verma, and believe me he will sure finance it. If you take it somebody else, probably it will not generate that much curiosity. Well, if you do that, don't forget to call me for a role in the movie, if not hero atleast for vilan ;-)

Career Calculus
Eric Sink talks about Career Calculus

What opportunities do you have for learning on a typical day as a developer? You spend approximately 250 days a year sitting in front of a keyboard and a screen. For how many of those days can you make L(Cluefulness , makign yourself more knowledgeable) a positive number?

Don't work for a manager
who is actively hindering
your practice of
constant learning.
Just don't do it.

A very interesting article for both ambitious and non-ambitious IT people out there. Well, if you are ambitious, you will be reading this post in the first place.

Getting Started with Your Own Software Company
Eric Sink writes Getting Started with Your Own Software Company

A very interesting artilce for all aspiring entreprenuers. The quotes I loved from the article:

When you start running your own company, you will probably have good days and bad days. If your bad days are anything like mine, somebody will eventually catch you whining about "how great the company would be if we could just get rid of all the customers and the employees." :-)

And

Like I said, there are no easy answers. Ideally, you would start your company using cash you've already got. But that's not often possible.

As unappealing as these options are, you will want your initial cash investment to be as small as possible. For an ISV, this can be really tough. It's going to take several months at least to build the 1.0 release of whatever your product is. It is quite likely that your spreadsheet doesn't show product revenue for 6-12 months even though it shows expenses in the very first month. Life is so unfair. :-)

My favorite solution to this problem is to start out as a consulting company and evolve into an ISV later. SourceGear was built this way. The concept is simple:

In your first 40 hours per week, build custom software or websites for other companies. Charge them enough money to pay your expenses.
In your other 40 hours per week, work on building your product. After the product is released and its revenues start to grow, you can gradually stop taking contracting gigs.
If this sounds like a lot of hard work, you are absolutely right. If that sounds unappealing, keep your job.

The article got links to various concepts on which Eric has written, a very good read indeed.

Anju Bobby George - Next Athlete in Rising

It’s only once in a quarter of a century that an Indian athlete comes close to winning a medal at the Olympics in athletics. In 1960 it was Milkha Singh, in 1984 it was P T Usha — both came close. And now it is Anju Bobby George who is tantalisingly close to a medal, not just a bronze this time, she is tipped to be one among the top three, and her performance speaks for itself.

Another fascinating athlete rising in the Indian sports, see her amazing pics and read wonderful interview in the link bleow.

'Gandhiji had forseen his own death'
On that fateful day, January 30, 1948, a few minutes before leaving for the prayer meeting, Gandhiji was talking to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He was informed that two leaders from Kathiawar were waiting to meet him. The Mahatma asked his grand daughter Manu to "tell them that if I am alive, they can talk to me after the prayer on my walk." "Almost all of us know that when Gandhiji died the last words on his lips were 'He Ram' but only few close associates knew that this was his longtime wish fulfilled," Dr Srivastava said.

On January 29, he told Manu, "If I were to die of disease, be it even a pimple, you must shout to the world from house-tops that I was a false Mahatma, even though people may swear at you for saying so. Then my soul wherever it be, will rest in peace. If on the other hand, someone were to put a bullet through me, as someone tried to throw a bomb at me the other day and I met this bullet on my bare chest without a groan and with Ram's name on my lips, then only you should say that I was a true Mahatma. This will bring good to the Indian people."

On January 30, Gandhiji walked towards the lawn for prayers outside where the people were already seated, his hand on the shoulders of his granddaughters Manu and Abha.

Ascending the steps he halted, took his hands off their shoulders and joined his palms to acknowledge the greeting of the people, a well-built young man pushed forward and pushing aside Manu who tried to stop him, knelt before Gandhiji as if to pay his respects and fired point blank three shots at Gandhiji's chest. Two bullets passed right through, the third was found embedded in the right lung.

Gandhiji sank to the ground with the words 'He Ram' and died as he wished with God's name on his lips.

Evolution of a Worm
Not long after the Department of Homeland Security announced its National Cyber Alert System at a morning press conference, security experts detected "MyDoom.B," which carries instructions for infected computers to launch a denial-of-service attack against Microsoft Corp.

The new worm quickly had the honor of being the subject of the government's cyber-alert system. Read the DHS's technical and non-technical postings on MyDoom, or sign up for the alerts at www.us-cert.gov.

Security firm Symantec said the "worm will perform a Denial of Service (DoS) against www.microsoft.com starting February 3, 2004 and www.sco.com starting February 1, 2004. It also has a trigger date to stop spreading on March 1, 2004. These events will only occur if the worm is run between or after those dates. While the worm will stop spreading on March 1, 2004, the backdoor component will continue to function after this date."

Worse yet, CNET's News.com reported, experts said MyDoom.B "prevents PC users from going to security sites and could block some antivirus software from getting the latest updates. The new virus adds a file to the infected computer that tells it where to look for certain Internet addresses. Among the addresses are F-Secure's update site, Symantec's update site and Microsoft's downloads site. Symantec confirmed that its users may have to delete the file before they can update their antivirus software, while Microsoft was still investigating the effect on Windows users."

'We were all wrong' - Kay got guts to Say to Bush about Iraq
''We were all wrong'' — Iraq had no remaining arsenals of germ-warfare weapons, no poison gas or a nuclear-weapons program, the White House's former chief weapons sleuth said yesterday, a stunning indictment of U.S. and Western intelligence agencies that undermines President George W. Bush's original justification for ousting Saddam Hussein.
David Kay's calm but candid and sweeping repudiation before the U.S. Senate's armed-services committee will also fuel the political firestorm over whether Mr. Bush misled Americans and the rest of the world when he launched a pre-emptive attack against Iraq last spring. The White House's core claim at the time was that Mr. Hussein, armed with weapons of mass destruction, posed a real and imminent threat to the United States.

"It turns out we were all wrong," said Mr. Kay, a former United Nations weapons inspector and top Central Intelligence Agency adviser who led the postwar Iraq Survey Group's search for banned weapons of mass destruction. Mr. Kay, who included himself among those who were incorrect, quit last week after uncovering no stockpiles and finding that the Pentagon was shifting resources from his group.

In effect, Mr. Kay's testimony lends credence to Iraq's insistence before the UN last year that it no longer had stocks of germ-warfare weapons, poison gas or an active nuclear-weapons program.

Mr. Kay laid the blame on deeply flawed intelligence gathering, not only by the CIA but also by France, Germany and others who agreed with the assessment that Baghdad had failed to destroy its stocks of banned weapons and might still be producing them.

"That is most disturbing," Mr. Kay said, adding that the spies had been equally wrong in underestimating the scope of nuclear-weapons programs in Iran, North Korea and Libya.

Its time for Bush to come out and say, its was stupid cowboy revenge attitude and oil, that made me go to war. He still speak the magic words like a parrot 'The World Is a Better Place With out him'. Gosh, look how intelligent the American and it allies intelligence services are. They let 911 happen and now they let Iraq War happen.

America, Its time to change your fundamental attitude towards the people in the Rest Of The World (as they say in America).

We need to put pressure on PM to get Joshi out of HRD
Governments of the past must be commended for their vision to have established and nurtured institutions like the IITs and IIMs. The fact that this commitment has stood the test of time of over 40 years and has been acknowledged unequivocally by the world. Credit must also go to the dedication and persistence of the educators in these institutions who gave up many lucrative options and possibilities and brought these institutions to where they are. Government had a role to play in the nascent stages. Today, when we talk of being international, needing freedom to compete with the world, being world class and so on, the IIMs and IITs should not be of any concern to the government.

The government has done what they had to do. Now onwards, the IITs and IIMs must be allowed to chart their path within the framework of some social norms and responsibilities.

Warrants against Kalam, Chief Justice
A sting operation conducted by a television journalist on Wednesday hit the portals of the Supreme Court when it was revealed that a Metropolitan Magistrate in Ahmedabad had allegedly issued bailable warrants against the President, Chief Justice of India, a sitting Judge of the apex court and a former president of its bar association without any case against them.

The journalist, who conducted a sting operation to expose corruption in the lower judiciary in Gujarat, claimed to have obtained warrants against President APJ Abdul Kalam, Chief Justice V N Khare, Justice B P Singh and former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association RK Jain after having bribed the Magistrate through local lawyers.

"What is happening in Gujarat? By giving Rs 40,000 you can get a judicial order? If this is the state of affairs, only God knows what will happen to the country," a stunned Chief Justice Khare said.

I feel very happy that you are posting topics of current affairs promptly.

It is easy for public figures to get protection when magistrates take steps against them. I have sent a telegram to the CJI V N Khare as I am likely to be harrassed by magistrate in ahmedabad and have slso sent letter to President on my blog site http://blogs.sify.com/mody04 for seeking protection as well as taking action against judicial officers and the advocate Mr. Soparkar againt whom I had filed complaint with Bar Council of Gujarat. I was subjected to police remand when I blew whistle for trying to expose banking fraud by a great bank robber company.I do not see any action by the President and the Chief Justice of Supreme Court of India. Can we all intensify efforts so that President and the CJI is forced to change the system radically with a lighting speed creating a lasting impact?

India's favourite new female star is 'ugly' and upright
She looks plain, wears thick black-rimmed glasses, teeth braces and dresses in unflattering voluminous clothes, yet she keeps viewers glued to television sets at prime time four days a week.

Clumsy, gullible and simple are adjectives used to describe her but Jasmeet Walia, better-known as Jassi, is one of the most popular characters on Indian television.

The Hindi serial -- entitled "Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin" aired Mondays to Thursdays on the entertainment-oriented Sony channel -- is the third most watched serial in the country of more than one billion people.

It is based on a top Colombian soap opera "Yo Soy Betty La Fea" (I am Betty the Ugly) with the original Spanish series becoming a small-screen sensation across Latin America and among the Hispanic community in the United States.

2 Prepare a document how long you have to milk them (Project plan)
3 Then prepare how to milk them (Design)
4 Then prepare what other accessories are needed to milk them (Framework)
5 Then prepare a 2 dummy cows (sort of toy cows) and show to client the
way in which u will milk them (UI Mockups & POC)
6 If client is not satisfied then redo from step 2
7 You actually start milking them and find that there are few problem
with accessories. (Change framework)
8 Redo step 4
9 Atlast milk them and send it to onsite. (Coding over)
10 Make sure that cow milks properly ( Testing)
11. Onsite reports that it is not milking there.
12. You break your head and find that onsite is trying to milk from bulls
13. Atlast onsite milk them and send to client (Testing)
14. Client says the quality of milk is not good. (UAT)
15. Offsite then slogs and improves the quality of milk
16. Now the client says that the quality is good but its milking at slow
rate (performance issue)
17. Again you slog and send it with good performance.
18. Client is happy..

By this time both the COWs aged and cant milk. (The software got old and
new software has come in market)

Eye Testing
Well, today I went for eye testing at Parkway Eye Care with Dr. Nitin Patel. Well, I have never got such a fulfledged eye testing done earlier, it was so cool going through the whole procedure and for a change the doctor actually explanied about the kind of sight I have.

Well, I have something called stigmatism. What that means is that, half of your eye can see properly and half cannot see properly, its like your having 1/2 sight. For me, I can see the vertical things properly, and horizontal things not as clear as vertical ones. Hmm, well, finally I know what kind of eye sight I have and its good to know.

I would fully recommend the doc for your eye testings. Here are the contact details:

There's an amazing eye clinic near where my grandparents live - Pondicherry. The eye treatment you get there can amazingly decrease your power ! It worked for me until out of sheer laziness I gave it up :(

Posted by Arvind.

I totally agree! I have always been disappointed by eyecare professionals or their staff. I found Dr. Patel a few years ago (when he was in the old office at Valley View)and he is by far the best eye doc I've been to. I couldn't believe how much time he spent with me to explain my eyecare concerns and answer my questions! I was amazed. You can tell that he really does love his job and he knows what he's doing. His staff is also very friendly and helpful. No one ever pressures you into buying anything like the commission workers at other offices. In fact, he gives you your prescription and tells you that you can get it filled wherever you want to. I came across this site by chance because I'm having trouble with my eyes and was looking for his number :)

Indian tech salaries will reach US levels: economist
Good news for techies: your salary will go up to American levels. Bad news for techies: your salary will go up to American levels.
Apparently, the gap between the paycheques of Indian IT pros and their American counterparts is bound to reduced, if the laws of economics are to be followed. At least, that’s what US economist Arnold Kling argues in a recent article on techcentralstation.com .

Refuting recent statements by American economists asking for government intervention to stop the flow of jobs from higher-paid US citizens in the US to lower-paid professionals in India and other countries, Kling argues that companies can expect to keep paying lower salaries to Indian pros in India without taking productivity losses.

He says that economics makes it impossible for a coder in Bangalore to be as productive as a coder in Seattle and still get paid only one-fifth as much. In other words, he contends, even if American companies outsourcing work to India are paying less per head than in the US, they will be paying about the same in the long run since they will have to hire more workers in India to get the same amount of work done.

Source: Indian tech salaries will reach US levels: economist - The Economic Times

I don't agree with this, what economists are talking about is the quality of work produced for the amount of money paid. Well, lets see the practical things going on the ground. Every Indian company which wants to expand its niche in the golbal market is adopting the route of CMM Level 5, Six Sigma practices and managing high level process control and thus maintaining quality of production. In US, you can hardly find any comapany which is going after these quality processes, atleast in IT departments its not happenning, almost every other company's IT department works like a start up. Every manager worries about 'Get the damn thing working, I don't care how it is written'. When coming to the quality of work, the analysts are forgetting that Indians have contributed in a huge way towards the IT Industry in west in the recent years and produced topnotch quality products. And when comparing the quality, well, for sure the top notch American Guys in IT Industry are very very birlliant and I have a personal experience working with them, but on an average an Indian IT Professional is more dedicated, hardworking, has drive for results than an average American IT Professional.

Alternatively, Indian pros will become as productive as those in the US, and start commanding the same salaries, which will nullify the offshoring advantage. Kling’s thesis is based on a simple economic law which posits that a worker must earn as much as the contribution he or she makes to the value of a product.
Well, I think with the current salary that indian IT professionals are getting, they are already in the highly paid rankings in the Country and they lead very comfortable life in the place where they are now. And talking about the amount of money a worker makes to the amount of money made by the organization and the unfair practices, gosh, i just stop laughing, thats what socialism or communism is like and capitalistic analysts talking about the same thing, give me a break. If worker wants to earn more, they will venture out start on their own, which is called as Entrepreneurism.

My 2 cents.

New Virus On the Prowl-------
Source: Scotsman.com News - Sci-Tech - Mydoom and gloom from new e-mail virus threat

A MALICIOUS new computer virus spread via e-mail is clogging networks and may allow unauthorised access to personal computers, experts are warning.

The worm, called Mydoom or Novarg, is carried as an e-mail attachment and sends itself out to new e-mail addresses once opened by the recipient.

The virus may also open a "back door" to the computer to give hackers access.

Thousands of e-mails triggered by the worm were bombarding networks within hours of its discovery, warned Vincent Gullotto, vice-president of California-based Network Associates’ emergency response team.

Unlike many of its predecessors, Mydoom does not entice the recipient to open the attachment by promising nude pictures or personal messages.

Instead, the e-mail carrying the virus often bears the subject "test" or "status". The message inside may read: "The message contains Unicode characters and has been sent as a binary attachment."

"Because that sounds like a technical thing, people may be more apt to think it’s legitimate," said Steve Trilling, of Symantec, an anti-virus company.

The worm only affects computers which use Microsoft Windows.

Thank God - Kalam speaks up for IITs, IIMs
President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam appears to have reservations about human resource development minister Murli Manohar Joshi’s efforts to recast IIMs and IITs.
The existing “brand images” of these institutions should be protected, the President said tonight in his address to the nation on the eve of Republic Day.

“The nation’s vision of developed India requires greater thrust to scientific and technological advancements. All our IITs, IIMs have graduated as world-class brand institutions in addition to the century-old premier institution — Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. These characteristics must be preserved and nurtured.”

If these institutions face problems in holding fair examinations, they could be addressed differently, he said.

The Telegraph - Calcutta : Nation

Mr. Minister Murli Manohar Joshi, will you stop making senseless statements about IIT's and IIM's and their standards and let them decide themselves how they want to function better. Democracy is not about putting the power in the hands of the center, its about giving the power to people who deal with the community. IIT's and IIM's are a community of intellictual people and the people invloved there know exactly how to take the benefits to more masses. If you think they are not doing enough towards that, then give directions like a learned intellectual, not destroy the whole process, don't hit the core of the education system for your political reasons.

Dr. Kurain - I Told Kalam He's Lucky I Chose Dairies
Pushing 80, Dr Verghese Kurien, the country’s legendary ‘doodhwala’, is not yet ready to hang his spurs. Credited with playing a stellar role in the implementation of Operation Flood, the cooperative movement in the dairy sector, and setting up of institutions like the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) and its Amul brand of utterly, butterly, delicious dairy products and the Institute of Rural Management, Anand, (IRMA), Dr Kurien is still an active and vocal champion of farmers’ rights in his dual capacity as Chairman of GCMMF and the National Cooperative Dairy Federation of India (NCDFI). Fiercely critical of the changes taking place in the dairy sector, especially the “corporatisation of the cooperative movement”, the grand old man has no qualms about calling a spade a spade. In a free-wheeling interview to Jyotsna Bhatnagar of FE, he talks about the state of the country’s dairy sector and the challenges ahead.

Yet again: they were changing a Bihar village and were shot dead
Ex-Naxalite Sarita and a former builder, Mahesh, mobilised people in and around Fatehpur block to revive a centuries-old 45-km canal system which virtually changed the face of this village. The Indian Express had featured their story on Diwali day, This Diwali, Heart of Darkness is Bright and Shining. As they did every evening, Sarita and Mahesh were travelling on a bike from Shabdo to the Fatehpur Block Resource Centre when at around 7 pm, they were shot by assailants.

The change the duo catalysed in Shabdo village—in the heart of the Naxalite-dominated Bihar-Jharkhand border—is spectacular:

• They successfully weaned hundreds away from their alcohol addiction

• People have erased boundaries of their individual fields totalling 175 acres. Collective farming has increased wheat production by at least 25 per cent.

• The two reached here in 1999 and revived a historical canal system. About 35,000 people in 40 villages got together under this scheme in which tanks were connected to a river or a stream through canals.

• In caste and class conscious Shabdo, the canal’s construction saw unprecedented community action: Rajputs and Dalits would work and eat together.

• When the Zila Parishad gave Rs 22 lakh, villagers donated land and built a community centre, anganwadi and a playground.

National Anthem Sung Again in Kashmir Valley Schools after 14 years
Source: Welcome to SIFY News
After a gap of 14 years, the Jammu and Kashmir government is reviving the old tradition of singing the national anthem during the morning assembly in government schools.

A senior official of the education ministry told PTI in Jammu that the practice, suspended due to militancy, is being revived in a phased manner in districts where there is less militancy, including in some places in the Kashmir valley.

The official said the government has also decided to establish four additional university campuses and 22 colleges to provide avenues for higher education to the youth.

Two campuses each of the Kashmir and Jammu universities would be in place soon. Work on the north campus of Kashmir University in Baramulla district has already been taken up while land for a south campus is being identified in Anantnag district.

Pretty surprising fact that National Anthem is not sung, well not a shocking one though, and really good and refreshing to know that J&K govt. is trying to revive the tradition again.

Historytalking.com - History of tales of Indian Diaspora
Via: Welcome to SIFY News

Historytalking.com, the website, developed by former BBC journalist Vijay Rana, hosts recordings of first person narratives of leading personalities in the Indian diaspora.

Its latest addition is Captain Abbas Ali, an old Indian National Army (INA) soldier and freedom fighter. The INA was founded by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

"I saw Netaji (leader) alive after his alleged plane crash (in Taiwan)", Ali says in his talk on the website.

Ali, a graduate from the Aligarh Muslim University, joined the British Army as a commissioned officer in 1939. A year later the young officer was sent to Southeast Asia to fight against Japan.

Other stories include:

* Cricketer Nasser Hussain was not the first Asian to lead a national English team; it was Sutinder Khehar who captained the English hockey team in the early 1980s.

* If you were an Indian woman in England during the 1960s and wearing a sari, you would not be allowed to supervise English staff. Raksha Tandon was sacked before she could begin her managerial job only because she refused to abandon her sari in favour of English dress.

* In the 1960s, the Ealing Council in London had a policy of having not more than 25 percent Asian children in a school. To keep the racial balance right, young Asian kids were sent to schools outside Ealing.

* After playing an important role in India's first Test victory at the Oval in 1971, wicket-keeper Farooq Engineer thought he would be booed by the Lancashire crowds, where he is settled. Instead he got a standing ovation.

* Tennis ace John McEnroe could never tolerate a Sikh, Raghubir Singh Mahajan, umpiring at Wimbledon.

* Legendary Mushtaq Muhammad, the youngest ever Test player from Pakistan, now lives in Birmingham, passing on techniques of the trade to the future Asian stars of English cricket.

The website was launched by veteran Saeed Jaffrey in June 2003, and aims to create a valuable online educational resource of oral history.

It invites people to volunteer information, eyewitness accounts and life experiences about some of the socially and educationally relevant events, social trends and cultural themes.

"Most of our contributors are senior citizens narrating their life experiences. While a large number of our visitors belong to the web-savvy younger generation. By bringing them together we hope to build bridges between the two generations," says Vijay Rana, editor of Historytalking.com, told IANS.

New stories appear on the site every week - stories of courage and determination, stories of social discrimination and stories of the pioneers of the social and cultural movements in Britain.

America Diconnected from the rest of the world
The recent speech of Dick Cheney at World Economic Forum, concentrated on terrorism.

But, a funny thing has happened. While the war on terrorism has dominated headlines, the great engine of globalization has kept moving.

And it seems America clearly, asusual, got disconnected from the world (rest of the world, as it calls).

Weird Day
Well, today, i mean yesterday was weird, i was sleeping almost all day and then I dropeed to two coffee glasses and so obviously broke them. Actually coffee came out really good, but it got dropped before I can drink all of it. Is this an indication of anything. Well, may be its like I am just focussing on things that fell good, but not on things that are boring but are necessary to fulfill the things and take a complete shape. Just like cofee tated very good, but its extremely important that I hold the coffee cup properly until the end. Well, I just kind of getting a feeling that I am making nice things happen, just like nice coffee, but not exactly making sure that the things get materialized properly, I am trying to depend on others for the most part, instead of taking control and getting hands dirty, well its extremely important to get hands dirty to make things happen in the way you want them to happen. Ram, take the charge and get going and make the things happen. You have a powerful soul reciding inside, take charge.

We are not worried about BPO Bill - Indian IT CEO's
Putting it even more emphatically, iGate chief delivery officer Mohan Sekar said, “nobody has any government contracts in India.”

American companies such as IBM, EDS, Accenture and CSC which usually handle large US government projects are expected to be the most affected. All of them have operations in India and are likely to be outsourcing government work here.

“The current move by the US senate to bar offshoring of government work, though may not have a great impact on Indian IT companies, does not augur well for their own economy. Such decisions do not help in moving towards a free-trade policy envisaged by WTO. This Bill is yet to be passed as a law and we hope the US government takes a more pragmatic view and not get pressurised by political considerations,” Satyam chairman B Ramalinga Raju said.

Why the rich fear globalisation
A very interesting article by Surjit S Bhalla: Why the rich fear globalisation. He wrote a book Imagine there's no country: Poverty, Inequality and Growth in the era of Globalization

Excerpts:
During the twenty years pre-globalisation period (1960-1980), per capita incomes in the poor world grew at 2 per cent per annum compared to the rich industrialised world's growth rate of 3.4 per cent i.e. the poor world grew at a considerably slower rate.

During these decades, there was no anti-globalisation movement, but the hard reality was that the rich were getting relatively richer. The reason there was no white man led anti-globalisation movement then was because the rich folks had never had it so good.

During these days, an average person in a rich country (let us call her Mary), born in 1960, witnessed her parents income double by the time she was 20 years old and thinking about entering the labour market. In contrast, an average poor person in a poor country (let us call her Sita) saw her parents income increase by only 50 per cent, or half the rate of her rich country counterpart.

In the globalisation period (post 1980), the poor countries began their long march towards catch-up. In sharp contrast to the previous 20 years, the fortunes were exactly reversed --the poor economies registered a growth rate double that experienced by the rich countries - 3 per cent per annum compared to the rich countries considerably slower growth of 1.5 per cent per annum. And the poor in the two poorest countries, India and China, saw their incomes increase at an even faster pace -- above 5 per cent per annum for over 20 years.

This miracle has never occurred before i.e. when about a billion people (about 350 million poor in India and 650 million poor in China in 1980) increase their incomes by 175 per cent in a short space of 20 years. One can debate how much of this increase in incomes of the poor was caused by globalisation.

What remains incontrovertible, however, is the fact that policy makers in both these countries were conscious of opening themselves up to the rest of the world, were conscious of the fact that only by globalising would they be able to reduce poverty and make their citizens richer.

But now let us go back to the effect of globalisation on the (mis)fortunes of Mary. In the pre-globalisation years, and especially if she came from an upper middle class family, she saw her family income triple. She not only went to college in 1980, but was able to 'easily' enter the best universities. Her own working period, however, has witnessed only a glacial increase in family income.

After 20 years of hard work, such income is up only 35 per cent, and most of the increase is driven by the fact that she is now working along with her husband. Five years of wage growth in the exploitative pre-globalisation days is equal to 20 years of wage growth in the era of globalisation.

To make matters worse, Mary finds that her children are finding great difficulty in entering the best universities, especially because of the large number of worthy applicants from Asia.

Put yourself in Mary's position -- would you also not rant and rave against globalisation? Of course you would; but would you do so if you were Sita? Of course not, because you have never had it so good. At the risk of being politically incorrect, but with the accuracy of being factual, it is the case that one should not witness any brown, or yellow, or black people in the vanguard of the anti-globalisation debate. If one does witness non-white intellectuals articulating anti-globalisation sentiments, then one needs the explanation of a psychiatrist, not an economist.

Why do some poor country intellectuals support the rich, elitist anti-globalisation movement? Perhaps these intellectuals have not really emerged from their feudal cocoon; perhaps they subliminally retain their colonial mentality.

The leaders and operators of the anti-globalisation movement are the formerly colonising rich whites, who, as per their heritage, need non-white intellectuals as their disciples and followers. If the intellectuals were to argue for Mary's relative enrichment, they would be honest and would be constructive towards finding a better future for all, rich and poor. But such sentiments do not befit a 'Left-intellectual'.

I'm not going to Hollywood: Ash
"Where does everyone get all their news?" She laughed that musical tinkle, using it to neatly sidestep the question. "Maybe talks are on but nothing is final as yet. In fact, a lot of talks are on. So lets wait and watch what happens. Don't take the surprise away now, come on." Who? Me? Surprised? Naaa! I tried to act as nonchalant as I could, but then I couldn't resist asking about talk of her not wanting to do the ' Bond gal ' role (if offered) in case it required her to do hot scenes with Mr Brosnan.

Again that laughter. "What a delightful bit of news. Where did it first come out? … Anyway, let me say here again that with nothing on the anvil as yet, I cannot comment. Once we're past the discussion stage and something is finalized, I may be able to shed some light. Right now, 'my lips are bonded', oops sealed! Ha ha ha!"

Clever, very clever, but then it was that quality of brains over beauty (which, as we all know was quite considerable to begin with) that set Ash apart from the rest the also-rans (hate to say that about Nicole, but hey.). And she did have the final say in this 'conversation', "Just yesterday Raj ji (Rajkumar Santoshi) asked me, 'I hope you are not leaving us for Hollywood. What are al these rumours I keep hearing?' And my reply was, 'No Rajiji, I am not going to Hollywood. Hollywood is coming to us. (Gosh, I just love that statement)I guess the world has realized our potential. They are now valuing our culture and our sense of understanding. And they are looking eastwards. So, I guess they will be adapting to our requirements with respect to our culture. And that's a big leap for all of us Indians. Right?"

Could I even begin to argue? I guess I will save that for the actual interview. Right Ash?

Siraj Desai's brush with Indian Jails
Siraj Desai, who got bail Friday after being in jail since January 18, was arrested after a fellow delegate to the World Social Forum, Salome Isaacs, charged him with rape.

Salome Isaacs has since withdrawn the charge, which Desai has denied. After his release, Desai recounted some of the more "humbling" moments of his incarceration.

Very interesting facts of Indian Jails, a must read interview.

Indian software firms shocked by US anti-BPO bill
In a recent move, the US Senate yesterday passed a law barring the sub-contracts to India and other countries by US companies to cut costs.

Under the measure, when the US Government gives contracts to an American firm the latter cannot give sub-contracts out of that to a source outside the US.

Thought the legislation is still to be approved by the US President, the contents of such ''omnibus'' bills, adopted in a hurry when a budget measure is long overdue, as in this case, is not changed later and the head of the government does not veto it.

Besides, states like Indiana, Connecticut, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina and Washington are slated to vote on bills that aim at banning foreign workers from public contracts.

Indiana were among the US states that backtracked from contracts that involve hiring foreign workers, a process called "off-shoring."

NASSCOM chief Kiran Karnik reacted, "We are dismayed to learn about the Bill in the US Senate that restricts off shoring of work contracted out by the US government. This Bill is yet to become a law, and we hope that wiser counsel will prevail."

Source: Welcome to SIFY News

In my view this is completely crazy, I agree that the Amecian workers need to be protected, that does not mean that you can dump the rest of the world completely. It should be handled in a way that x% of contracts stay in US and y% ofcontracts can be offshored. This is how the rest of the world works. Lets say in FDI(Foreign Direct Investment) rules, based on the industry the percentages are fixed. The same should be done here also, so that its a win-win situation. Is there anybody who is thinking in rational terms?

The interests of big business are driving the off shoring of jobs. EVERY professional job is at risk of being off shored due to labor arbitrage NOT free market dynamics!

Silence Or Compliance

Copyright (c) 2004 All rights reserved.

INTRODUCTION
This paper is just a further elaboration on some of the topics that I presented in my work entitled “The Economy” which I hope has inspired the moral, the passionate, and displaced future working slave class to start inquiring about their ultimate condition within the hands of the business/political elite. It is absolutely wonderful that certain members of the media have started to question the direction and motives of the business/political elite and have beat the bushes where they’ve been hiding thus exposing their true motives to the clear light of day. But make no mistake the business/political elite will stop at nothing to eliminate any opposition be it ethical government, the media, or any other encumbrance that inhibits them from achieving their goal of creating a subservient working class and a contrasting unencumbered business/political elite power base.

SILENCE/COMPLIANCE
At this point in time the media has the business/political elite (forgoing referred to as the controllers) on the defensive at least within the United States, which is in the mist of a presidential election year. Make no mistake the controllers would like to and will eventually silence all media dissent against their planned worldwide domination of all elements that can negatively effect their goal of sucking every last drop of revenue from the world into their realm. If this means devising a means of quelling dissent from those within the media that don’t wish to go quietly with the controllers view – so be it. Keep in mind that money and power are the driving force of the controllers and everything and anything that inhibits their eventual control over these elements in their eyes must be eliminated. This could mean the off shoring of media jobs to compliant outlets such as India where in the case of the English speaking world there exists a future working slave class that speaks English rather decently. The controllers could then eliminate media disseminated descent to their plans of complete global control over all the factors of production including the eventual working slave class. This means that no job is safe from the plans by the controllers to evolve all jobs into mere subservient, compliant, malleable factors of production. Time is limited for the controllers and others that support the free trade (code word – free) subjugation over all workingmen and women. The ideologue's within the future working slave class will blindly follow one another lock step onto the slave ship that will set sail for their future of no dissent, compliance, no morality, no freedom, no future but one of subservience. The time is very near at hand so those within the media that are the moral voice of dissent must take our case to a fever pace in order to expose and keep all rouses from becoming the new molded distorted facts that can be espoused by the controllers. For the controllers their religion is money and power because for them nothing else matters. If they can gain control over not only you the educated working, the hard factory working, the service sector working, then they will be free to build a truly worldwide free market economy where they are free to do what they wish when they wish it.

BEND THE TRUTH LIKE LIGHT THROUGH A PRISM
If you say something enough and if you change the dynamics and distort the facts to your liking then eventually it will be believed by enough people to become the truth. Basically, the controllers just prior to taking complete control over all media dissent will be hard pressed to dispute facts such as 3 million jobs lost in under 3 years, poverty within the United States at record high levels, whole town centers across rural America with a preponderance of vacant store fronts, a trillion dollar deficit, most states within budget crisis, a college education now getting further from the reach of most Americans, and the list goes on and on. Historically speaking when facts don’t convey what the power elite (in our case the controllers) wish than they just change the way those facts are presented so they convey a distorted picture favorable to those in control. This is nothing new and has been employed quite successfully by those in power many times in the past in the form of propaganda. We must maintain focus on the standard measures used within the past and not let the seeping of new measures (touted by the controllers) distort the facts.

THE TIME IS NOW
It is imperative that we work with the media while it is still free to convey the truth about the controller’s objectives and goals. Time is quickly running out for the average working citizen to maintain some semblance of influence over their respective governments. The controllers will and are gaining control over these governments covertly, directly, and through draining the government treasuries converting partially effective governments into impotent shells of past power. Once the controllers are finished with governments than even the political elite will be at jeopardy of becoming obsolete. So those within the political elite may be enjoying the fruits of soiled money conveyed to them by the business controllers but make no mistake once the business controllers have achieved their objectives they will dispose of even the political elite thus eliminating this drain on their coveted profits. There exists one goal of the controllers and that is to extract and drain as much wealth from the world as is possible. The controllers have no God, no religion, no morals, no scruples, and no conscience but only one overriding unquenchable desire – the complete control over all aspects of their bottom line. They will stop at nothing to satisfy their additive need to acquire more and more wealth at the expense of anything that gets in their way. Any worker that is currently employed by a firm that has global reach over its factors of production (and this doesn’t include many small to medium sized firm’s playing by the rules) are at risk of being eliminated. This includes every imaginable profession since there currently exists the technology and desire (by the controllers) to out source any profession – first and foremost the media (the thorn within the controllers side). It is imperative that in the next few weeks and months that all of us that count ourselves among the working class keep abreast of issues, meaningful relevant facts, and not be swayed by propaganda spewing from the controllers. We must make our voices heard through written, vocal, and peaceful dissent to the path that the controllers are leading us down. We must not and cannot follow the controllers blindly into a future of no government and working slave subservience. Remember the controllers will use key phrases such as “free market”, “household survey”, patriotism, and many others to sway global opinion towards their way of reasoning. Also, keep in mind there are many honest, decent, caring employers (mostly small, medium, and large sized businesses) that are playing by the rules and respect their workers, and communities. It is probably only a few but powerful firms making up the Fortune 500 that are the real controllers of a destiny of worker subservience. I will continue to write the unpopular truth be it what may come. You should continue to question, reason, and judge the facts and not be swayed by propaganda. Let the facts speak for themselves because they surely will if given the chance!

COLD MOUNTAIN
Cold Mountain, what can i say, splendid movie, wonderful picturization of emotions, has very good scenic beauty and talks about America in the times of Civil war, you can say its a love story made out of the war scenario, some thing like Vidhu Vinod Chopra's '1942 A Love Story'.

The most funny diaglouge was Renee Zewllweger asking Nicole Kidman - 'Did you wrap your legs arround him?'. Renee was marvellous, will certainly right for best supporting actor award with Sam in LOR. Nicole as usual stunningly beautiful and splendid in acting. Jude Law was good too.

I completely enjoyed watching the movie end to end and it kind of gave me a feeling if there are problems arround people tend to help each other and if its cosy, they just stay for themselves, something like what happened during 911 and Balck Out in NY. Reminded of the affections people show in India too. Enjoyed it thouroughly.

Review on Khakhee
Well, first I have to tell you the funny thing about the movie, usually when u go to movie in a theater there is a chance of missing the starting of the movie, but strangely I missed the end of the movie, after Tushar shoots (who is a suspense), the projector failed and gosh missed the last part.

Anyways, about Khakhi, its a long movie asusual, but the best part of the movie is, its not all that movie stunt blablabla like, its action is completely down to earth, natural and the Rajkumar Santoshi made sure that the grip of the movie is there till the last frame, its a fentastic screen play. Well, for sure asusual you feel its not realistic some scenes, on the whole worth the money you spend on the ticket. Everybody gave a terrific performance. Kudos to the movie, the best part is that Rajkumar Santoshi successfully portrayed the patriotism that is filled in the Muslim communit in India, he showed them that they are also Indians and they study along with us in the same schools and are filled with Desh Bhakti, I have to commend Raj on that part.

Rediff Review: If there is one thing that you must do when you watch Khakee, it is this: You must focus complete attention to the goings-on. A momentary lapse in your focus or a brief hiatus to buy Popcorn at an inopportune moment may deprive you of exciting moments of this densely-packed and intricately-laid out film.
Rajkumar Santoshi's latest offering Khakee is tough, electrifying and explosive. It is one of the most exhilarating thrillers to reach the screen in recent memory.

Khakee scores points at almost all levels, except… Read Welcome to Sify.com

Desperate US techies to 'code for food'
What on earth does that mean?

Simple, haven't you heard of "Food for Work". That oft-highlighted programme the Indian government launches to help people in times of famine and draught. This means the same thing. Only, it's in the lingo of a jobless US techie .

Yes, that sign was held up by a jobless protestor outside a Manhattan conference on outsourcing that opened Wednesday. ( Do you think Indians would have reacted differently if they faced job losses? )

Recent reports have said at least one out of 10 technology jobs in the United States would move overseas by the end of this year.

Maybe the US politicians would start a “Code for Food” programme. After all, it’s an election year .

'If Vajpayee, Musharraf bring peace, they will deserve Nobel'
Source: The Hindu News Update Service
If Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, succeed in settling the Kashmir issue and bring peace to the region, they will deserve the Nobel peace prize, a leading American columnist said today.

"Shrewdness" on the Indian side and "desperation" in Paksitan have come together to produce a potential Nobel Peace prize for "the two uncommon leaders," the Washington Post's Jim Hoagland wrote in his column.

Well for sure that will be a Nobel Prize winning achievement and they will get all kinds of prizes available in the world and they will stand in the history of world for ever.

Desparate is right. Only India should get that Nobel prize not those Pakis ! They are only afraid now that we'll do something nasty to them and hence they're willing to talk !

Well, Peace is like clapping, you need two hands to produce sound. What ever may be the reasons that the India and Pakistan fight each other, its good for people of both countires to live in peace. Most of the instability is due to the political games played by paki politicians, now that Mushraff is talking in outright terms, lets see if he delivers what he talks about.

Time running out fast for H1-B applicants
Your time for getting to the US on an H1-B this year is running out. Fast.

With the quota having brought back down from 195,000 to 65,000 for the year, the situation has suddenly changed from not enough applicants – as was the case in 2003 – to far too many chasing the limited number of visas available.

Some estimates say the quota could be reached as early as March or even February.

One way to ensure you’re not out of the race is to opt for the fast-track review – the accelerated 15-day process. Not paying the premium will mean having to wait the normal three to six-month period, by which times this year’s quota will definitely be gone.

Future engineers flocking to IIT's Techfest
Techfest 2004, the seventh since it started in 1998, includes teams from NT University, Singapore, Institute of Engineering, Nepal and University of Peradinya, Sri Lanka. This year prize money totals Rs 7 lakhs spread over 25 competitions that test practical application of engineering knowledge through paper presentation and working models. With six workshops and a lecture series, the festival turns out to be a melting pot of engineering brilliance, thought and activity.
‘‘That’s what makes it so exciting to attend. Firstly, a technical festival organised by an IIT automatically draws attention among other students. Then the range of events like Yantriki, which is perhaps a one of a kind robotics competition organised in India, is mindblowing. There’s a whole load of engineering news and advancement that you can catch up on. Where else could I have caught a documentary on spy equipment!’’ says William Benjamin, final year mechanical engineering student at MIT.

This is exciting to know, in US there is an organizatoin called F.I.R.S.T which does this for school children, making science fun to do.

For Priyanka And Rahul - Politics on cards for sure!
Main man bana rahi hoon par kab tak faisla karongi yeh pata nahi hai (I am giving it a thought, but cannot say when will I make the final decision)," she said, adding that her decision could take one week or even three years.
Commenting on the issue, Rahul said, "I never said no to join politics." The duo made these remarks when mediapersons covering the high- profile three-day visit insisted on lifting the veil of secrecy about their decision to join politics ahead of the coming General elections itself.

Source: Welcome to SIFY News

Well, family legacy of politics, and its soo tempting its almost impossible to ignore politics. The better part is that both Priyanka and Rahul are hingly educated and we need people like that. The down side is that how informative/reactive they will be to the needs of the real poor people who comprise the majority of Indian population.

Attarboy, the new Sultan of Swing

On a quiet Tuesday afternoon, Brisbane seems a world away. In his roadside perfume shop outside the Jama Masjid, Mehmood Khan is praising the fragrance of his ' attars '. Suddenly, a young girl comes running out of the mosque. " Abba jaldi aao, Guddu ne chauka mara ," she yells.

Meet Irfan Pathan , the boy who took 9 wickets for 16 runs in an under-19 match against Bangladesh. The same boy who transited to manhood on that sensational evening in Sydney recently, when he got rid of Steve Waugh and Adam Gilchrist with deliveries that would have done Wasim Akram proud.

Connoisseurs rave about his swing and swerve, critics acknowledge his aggression and willingness to learn. The discerning, like Sourav Ganguly , Sunil Gavaskar and Greg Chappell, have called him the find of the tour. Ravi Shastri believes he is a big gain for India. Akram, Irfan's long-time idol and newfound mentor, dubs him a "good bloke, with a lot of potential".

But for Mehmood Khan, he's just Guddu, his son. Never mind that he's the talk of Vadodara.

Mehmood Khan remains modest. "It's the grace of God," he says. "Irfan wanted to play for the country and he has made it. Now he needs to put in a lot of hard work to stay in the side." Overseas fans also seem to have taken to Irfan. An Indian family took Irfan to their home and offered him hot kababs and chicken biryani , says his father.

Irfan's elder brother Yusuf recently scored a century in a local match. When the spectators crowd found out who he was, they hoisted him on their shoulders. Makes one wonder what kind of reception Irfan will receive when he returns home, to the perfume shop and the mosque where it all began.

Attarboy, the new Sultan of Swing - The Times of India

Thats called wonder, results of true gifted talent combined with hard work and passion. God when are you giving me a break like that ;-)

Mumbai 'dabbawalas' to teach IIM students
After impressing Prince Charles with their clockwork precision and managerial skills, the famous 'dabbawalas' or tiffin carriers from Mumbai are all set to teach some tricks of their trade to over 1,000 management students gathered here.

The students of IIM-Lucknow have invited representatives of Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Carriers Association Raghunath Medge and Gangarao Talekar to Manfest- 2004, their annual festival. The theme of this year's festival is 'The complete CEO workout'.

more facts about Dabbawallas..

These management gurus wear dhotis, Gandhi topis and speak only a smattering of English while delivering lectures about efficiency to management students, corporate houses and business conferences.

They are Mumbai’s dabbawallas who speak from the heart about the trade they know best – carrying two lakh dabbas to the city’s office-goers.

Secretary of the Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Charity Trust Gangaram Talekar and M Medge, a tiffin carrier contractor — both essentially dabbawallas — have been delivering lectures at premier institutes like the IIMs, CII conferences, Symbiosis institutes, WTC, for the last six years.

“It started with the Confederation of Indian Industry inviting us for a lecture,” said Talekar. “Our connections are well-managed, which is what we talk about at the lectures. Without putting in any capital ourselves, we manage to achieve a difficult feat,” he added.

Around 5,000 dabbawallas work every day through a system of multiple relay to deliver tiffin boxes in an exercise that begins at 9 am and ends at 5 pm. The finely-tuned system earned them a Six Sigma rating from business magazine Forbes.

Points discussed by the two dabbawallas

* They rely on low capital and use cycles, wooden carriages and local trains to achieve their target.

* There are several groups that work independently and network with each other to achieve one goal.

* They meet once a month where all the groups gather and thrash out issues.

* There is no retirement age. People work as long as they want. to.

* Since their lifestyle is simple and involves a lot of physical exercise, they rarely suffer from illnesses.

* The dabbawallas have a credit society which gets them through money crunches.

* Being ‘annadattas’ they are automatically treated with respect.

Six Sigma rating

A few years ago, US business magazine Forbes gave Mumbai’s dabbawallas a Six Sigma performance rating, or a 99.999999 percentage of correctness — which means one error in six million transactions.

Six Sigma is a process that helps organisations focus on delivering near-perfect products and services. If you use Six Sigma you can measure how many defects there are in a process and can systematically figure out how to eliminate them and try and achieve zero-defect status.

How the dabba is delivered

* The first dabbawalla picks up the tiffin from home and takes it to the nearest railway station.

* The second dabbawalla sorts out the dabbas at the railway station according to destination and puts them in the luggage carriage.

* The third one travels with the dabbas to the railway stations nearest to the destinations.

* The fourth one picks up dabbas from the railway station and drops them of at the offices.

* The process is reversed in the evenings.

One Cingular sensation?
Wireless carriers, like the Democrats, have suffered from an excess of competition. But Cingular, the company co-owned by Baby Bells SBC Communications and BellSouth, is said to have made an all-cash bid for AT&T Wireless.

If AT&T Wireless sells out to Cingular, it would knock down the number of major national carriers from six to five. It would also be the first bit of significant consolidation in the wireless sector since Deutsche Telekom (DT: Research, Estimates) bought VoiceStream (now known as T-Mobile) in 2001.

Still, analysts say investors should not rush into the wireless sector since there is still a lot of uncertainty about how things will pan out. For one, speculation about wireless mergers has been running rampant on Wall Street for the past three years.

Cingular makes AT&T Wireless bid; Combo would top Verizon as No.1 cellphone carrier - USA Today

I just heard on NPR news that Cingular made a cash offer to AT&T board over the weekend. Have to wait and see whats going to happen.

Well, when I came to US in 2001, i saw Cingular offices in Atlanta and thought this company looks really cool, it will be good if I can get into this company, now I am in and working, well that was some real wishful thinking. Now Cingular might become the largest wireless carrier and thats for sure going to bring lots of opportunities for me to expand to a wider base, hopefully, it never hurts to do wishful thinking.

A fine line between corruption and conscience
It’s easy to be ‘Miss Clean’ when you earn a neat packet in one of those jobs which don’t require you to hobnob with the janta. But what if you’ve burnt the midnight oil to finally get to that ‘job with clout’? What if you are a politician or a bureaucrat who’s trying to put in a day’s honest work? That’s when the real test of remaining squeaky clean begins. You are now in a position where you can influence the lives of people with the flourish of that single signature of yours. You now take home an above-average monthly salary which doesn’t fly your family to Switzerland in the summers, but if you didn’t mind getting your fingers dirty, you could. After all, you routinely take decisions involving crores of rupees and speed money didn’t happen yesterday. Temptation, temptation...does it get worse if you are a woman with influence?

Perhaps being a woman does help screen you from certain faces of corruption. But does that mean you fight it too? The anonymous lady IAS officer answers: “A lot of us have decided not to go after corruption aggressively. It may make you ineffective in this set-up. We need to focus on improving our system instead.”

Don't date that BPO babe
Rachel's my girl. She's Rachna by day, Rachel by night. Confused? Don't be. Rachna works in a call-cente r and Rachel is her westernised moniker for professional purposes.

Rachel's a pretty girl, very cosmopolitan . Intelligent to boot. And I wish I had never dated her. Think I am crazy? Well I have my reasons. In fact, 10 of them:

1) She is not Rachna anymore. Not even at home. She likes to be called Rachel all the time. I miss my girl.

2) While the world sleeps, Rachel awakens and… goes to work . And it's when I'm in my deepest slumber that she calls and insists on love talk. Neighbours raise their eyebrows and mouth words like 'loose morals'. After all, middle class morality says, no maiden from a respectable family goes gallivanting in the middle of the night. I don't care, she doesn't care, but I do wish she wouldn't keep sighing about the liberal West.

3) She practices her weird call-center accent on me. I mean, I love to be of help in her work, but now she seems to use it all the time. Believe me…that twang is really mind-blowing.

4) Rachel has got used to croissants, pasta and chocolate truffles. That's the kind of food at her workplace and it is free. But I have to foot the bill at restaurants she now wants to eat at.

5) Then she works off those calories at the office gym. So do the men at her workplace. Lately she has been eyeing the little roll around my middle with pronounced unhappiness. Me? Exercise? I'd rather live a loveless life.

6) She wants 23 roses on Valentine's Day - one more than Mary (once Meera) got. Plus a teddy bear, perfume, all branded. She spends hours shopping for it, I pick up the tab. I mean, Valentine's Day? Whoever heard of it?

7) She gave up Jagjit Singh for Robbie Williams. Threw out Shah Rukh and developed a crush on Enrique Iglesias instead. What if after marriage she decides she doesn't like a desi husband after all?

8) Weekend for Rachel is defined in the American way. Work hard through the week and then party hard. I work hard during the week and then…work hard during the weekend. She wants to party, take in a film, live it up. I am pooped.

9) Rachel is due for promotion. She is good at what she does - transforming an irate customer into an affable pal in seconds. Problem: She treats me like one too. When I am a little miffed, she purrs: "How may I help you?'

10) This one's important. I am just not good enough any more. Last month, she dated a colleague with an equally jarring accent. And promptly had a crush on him. That's the third this year.

Still think I am crazy?

Legacy of IIMs, IITs: Joshi on the rampage
“We don’t need no education.....we don’t need no thought control...teachers, leave the kids alone”. Union HRD minister (an Allahabad academician to boot!) MM Joshi would do well to give his ever-wagging finger a rest and give in to Pink Flyod’s wise words.
Surely, the minister sees the IITs and IIMs as no different than Central PSUs under the ‘command and control’ of colleagues in the Cabinet. What he chooses to forget is the fate of his own alma mater, once described as “Oxford of the East.” Meanwhile, students and academia are beginning to demand answers: What is the minister trying to fix when it ain’t broke in the first place?

The IIMs and IITs have maintained a legacy of meritocratic excellence because they have not been subjected to government control so far. Now, thanks to a gentleman who favours rewriting of NCERT textbooks, teaching of astrology in IITs and Sanskrit in IIMs, this legacy is in danger. The minister should forget about clipping the wings of IITs and IIMs and focus on ‘monitoring’ the quality of India’s primary and secondary education.

He should attempt to ensure that the ambitious Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan — which aims at ensuring all 6-14 year olds complete eight years of schooling by 2010 — is a success. He should hold to account staff which draws salaries but doesn’t show up to teach; those who let ‘schools’ without blackboards, chairs, tables, drinking water supply and toilets crop up.

Gosh, what is this guy upto, destroying the bastions that are instrumental in creating army of intellectuals across the world and currently making waves by being the most entreprenueric community in the world and making sure that India does not miss the next IT Wave. I do admit IT wave is not the whole thing, but here we have committed army of intellectuals who are all set to wave the Indian flag across the world and bring billions of dollars into the country which country can benefit on by passing the benefits to the grass roots. The duty of govt. is to provide the grass root infrastructure and make sure that the basic education reaches the poor masses across India, not to destroy the system which is working wonders. These political swines and beurocratic babu's now want a control on the institutions that are producing army of intellictuals year after year, so that they can weild their brute power, they want every thing glitterring under their control, only we have to rise to help ourselves to this situation.

Fractal Blogosphere
Via Rajesh Jain

Richard MacManus suggests an approach to "measure of scale in the weblogging world. The goal is to help bloggers, particularly new ones, easily fit into a suitable blogging pattern." The 5 Fractal levels for bloggers identified (based on the number of visitors):

10 - Personal Blogger
100 - Social Blogger
1000 - Community Blogger
10,000 - Broadcast Blogger
100,000 - Celebrity Blogger

Well, my traffic is 100 plus, so I am a social blogger, i can see repeat readers slowly increasing but for sure it takes a while to cross 1000. Probably after I come up with website for DILT which I am planning on currently.

'I wonder if Kalam is that childlike' - SHoba De
India's original media head-turner, 'bindaas' personified, first editor of Stardust, writer of a succession of best-selling, sex-laden novels, epitome of post-prudish femininity, mother of six and many things besides, Shobhaa De pioneered the New Generation Indian woman. One who wasn't hypocritical enough to hide her sexuality behind a coy 'pallu', she ministered confidence to the newly emergent woman professional, a rare breed when she got going in the 1970s. Over the years, Shobhaa has evolved into a symbol of post-modern Indian womanhood, harbinger of an age that sees Sheila Dikshit, Vasundhara Raje, Uma Bharati, Sushma Swaraj, Mayawati, Mamata Banerjee and, of course, Jayalalithaa at the helm of politics. In a contemplative discussion with Chandan Mitra, an iconoclastic Shobhaa reflects upon her evolution.

Hmm, I haven't read any of her books, though I know she is a rebellion writer, may be I will have to get some next time.

So Many Countries - Hehehe

I am all excited, today in tracking I saw so many countries accessing my site, it is such a wonderful feeling to watch people from so many countries visiting my site. This gives the gig I need, wooohoooooo. Actually on other days, I had visitors froming from Singapore, Bangladesh, Dubai, Ireland,China, etc.. This image is updated in tracking on a day to day basis, so does not have an aggregate of all the countries that my site is accessed from. I did not get any hits from South American countries yet.

I had about 125 unique hits today. Looks like I need to redesign my site for accommodating for advertisement revenue.

I track my site using www.free-stats.com

India tame Aussies in their own den after 12 years
Yet another superb batting display marked by an unbeaten century by man-of-the-match VVS Laxman, and excellent bowling by rookies L Balaji and Irfan Pathan, enabled India to beat world champions Australia on their home soil after a gap of 12 years before a capacity crowd at the Gabba on Sunday.

Its wonderful to see India winning like this. I am glad Irfan Pathan is going well. By bro, Ganesh, was also a competitor during the selectin process in Banglaore, but he is not that matured and so he lost his position not able to handle situatio, hope he will get more strategy for next year selections.

Girl who can see inside of human bodies
Natasha Demkina is not an ordinary, but an extraordinary, Russian girl.

The 16-year-old native of Saransk, a town 400 miles from capital Moscow in Western Russia, claims that she can see inside human bodies, thanks to her X-ray vision.

It all began when Natasha was 10. One day, she told her stunned mum Tatiana that she could see "two beans," "a tomato" and a "vacuum cleaner" inside her.

Initially, doctors dismissed her claims, but after exhaustive tests, they were left baffled.

"I recognise this girl has unusual abilities," The Sun quoted Dr Irina Kachan, who conducted tests on Natasha in her hometown, as saying.

Added another doctor, “She is like a human X-ray machine”.

"We were deeply sceptical at first, fearing this girl was seeking to make idiots of us."

"But we cannot explain by normal means what she is seeing."

In one instance, Natasha, who now plans to study medicine.

I would really like to get in touch with Natasha to ask for her advice.
After watching the programme I was so angry for her - if they had not put her under strain and changed her format they would have seen what an amazingly gifted woman she is.
Thank you

Arundhati Roy continues anti-America tirade
Addressing delegates on the second day of Mumbai Resistance in suburban Goregaon, the Booker Prize winner said a joint session of WSF and MR should be held to identify major corporations that are profiting from the destruction of Iraq. "We could list every project they are involved in."
Roy said, "We could shut them (corporates) down. It's a question of bringing out collective wisdom and experience of past struggles to achieve a target."

Criticising the United States for its occupation of Iraq, Roy said Washington and its allies were re-drafting the war ravaged country's constitution, trade laws, tax laws and intellectual property laws in order to turn it into an American style capitalist economy.

"All the infrastructure facilities that were deliberately targeted and destroyed by the coalition forces during the war, are now being reconstructed by American private companies," she said.

She said resistance had to begin with a refusal to accept the legitimacy of the US occupation of Iraq. "In countries like India and Pakistan, we must block the US Government's plan to have their soldiers in Iraq."

Taking an aggressive stance, Varavara Rao, a poet, said only an agrarian revolution can reverse the process of "imperialist globalisation". He asked representatives attending the MR and WSF meets to "either join a violent struggle for change or at least unite their movements to fight imperialism and globalisation."

He said the "imperialist forces" were operating in India through their "agents" like big corporate house, top bureaucrats, a large number of politicians and "stooges" in media. "If one has to target the imperialists here, one has to primarily hit at their agents."

Kamal's 'Virumaandi' reaches out through cable TV
Chennai, Jan. 17. So you thought cable TV was Tamil film industry’s biggest villain ? Kamal Hassan, however, thought differently.
‘Virumaandi’ is reaching out to villages through 200 independent cable TV channels with an average base of 30,000 viewers each. A one-hour special on the movie telecast twice everyday, including an appeal from the actor to discourage piracy, is working its magic in rural Tamil Nadu, thanks to cable TV.

“Instead of treating cable TV operators as our arch enemy, it’s better to use them as branch offices, allies and vehicles of publicity,” says the innovative filmmaker.

Kamal has always shown that he can think differently and implement it successfully, he always amazes me.

ISB girls create 'Perfect Professor'
At ISB, they don’t just learn business. Observant girl students have even created the ‘Perfect Professor’, an imaginary being students created with all the desirable traits they want, ranging from looks, talent to mentoring ability.

Prof Ziv Katalan’s eyes, which the students seem to be enamoured of, forms the base of the cake. Katalan, who teaches ‘decision models and optimisation’, comes from Wharton. To this base, the students have added Prof Robert Stine’s forearms and Prof Mark Finn’s calves. Stine is also from The Wharton School while Finn, who teaches ‘financial accounting in decision making’, is from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University .

“We asked Zameer for more inputs on Prof Finn, but our favourite drummer demurred saying it was a private matter!’’ students Diana Nariman, Lakshmi Muralidharan and Mayura Balasubramaian said. Creating the ‘Perfect Professor’ was an all-woman affair.

Amongst the ingredients for the ‘first layer’ of the cake, the students suggest “three tumblersful of Prof Jagmohan Raju’s humour, 574.098 bathtubs of Prof Huggy Rao’s presence, charm and charisma, Prof Anjani Jain’s smile, a dollop of Prof Scott Ward’s voice and six pegs of Prof Waterman’s extremely amazing accent’’.

Why NASA scientists visited Nagpur before Mars mission
There’s an air of expectancy over the Spirit rover's exploits on Mars, but not many know that this place on earth is one of the main reasons why it is so.

Coinciding with the Mars exploration, a geophysicist associated with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is studying the surface of one of only two impact craters created by a meteor strike on basaltic land, which is located at Lonar in Maharashtra.

Horton Newsom, a research professor, is here to collect samples on NASA's request in a bid to unlock the mysteries of the Martian surface. The reason is the uncanny similarities between the Lonar crater and those on Mars which have also been formed in basalt.

The Spirit rover has already wandered over the surface of one such Martian crater, a much bigger one though. Newsom, from the Institute of Meteoritics at New Mexico University in US, was one of those responsible for selecting the site.

By comparing samples from Lonar with those from Mars, scientists hope to solve the one big riddle surrounding the red planet: Did it ever contain water, could it ever support life?

Ash is the mostest again - Most Attravtive Women

Let's face it. You can love her, you can hate her, but you can't wish her away. Our Ash has done it again. This time, she has been voted the most attractive woman of 2003.

What a boost for the Indian glamour scene. This was not a made-in-India competition, though one suspects that we Indians tend to be the most enthusiastic voters online and the sheer numbers help. Ash was voted the most attractive in a poll conducted by hellomagazine.com , and the also-ran list includes amazing beauties the world over. Chew on this - British actress Keira Knightly came in second followed by no less than Nicole Kidman and Catherine Zeta Jones. Angelina Jolie was there somewhere, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cindy Crawford, but Ash beat them all to it.

Most attractive women of 2003

1. Aishwarya Rai

who do the men think is the most beatiful woman on earth?

Posted by babytammy.

You know why? some Indians choose to show their patriotism by voting such stupid events.

Some time ago, BBC was conducting a poll about the best song in the world. (Internet is not wide-spread in china). I recieved atleast 10 mails from my friends that urged me to "show my patriotis," and stand up for my country and language, by voting the stupid song "Rakkamma kaiya thattu"

In tamil there were many songs which are much better than this one. Some stupid fellow decided to promote this sond in the poll and people followed.

I suspect same thing happened here!.

To be frank, Aish got Miss. World just to please one of the biggest markets in the world (INDIA).

When an Indian becomes the richest in the world,
we can be proud of it. (or Finishing on top of Olympic medal list, or bagging most Nobel prizes in an year)

Posted by windows-games.

Windows Games,

First thing I have to tell you is that, when you said 'Internet is not wide-spread in china', you are completely ignorant to the world facts, just get a life/facts before you make statements. China is more wired than India and get this fact too, China has lot more literacy rate than India.

If you don't have any accomplishments under your belt, you don't have RIGHT to comment on the greatness of India.

You want to measure the knowledge based on 'Nobel Prize', then what should I say about the Nobel comitee which did not give a peace prize for Gandhi, I can question its credibility.

And you want to know the accomplishments of India, then see this, Indians invented '0' the root of mathematics, Indian designed Intel Chip which is used in most of the pc's acrosst the world, about 30% of NASA employees are Indians, we made satellites and sucessfully launched them, we make nukes and tested them, these are just tip of the ice berg which we accomplished in just a little more than 50 years of independence.

First be proud that you are born as an Indian, you are one of those morons who get sucked into the western culture and think that is the best thing in the world. Get a life and some knowledge and some credibility behind your name dude, to be eligible to make some blatant comments.

And Another thing Ramdhan, everyone don't think aishwarya Rai is all that good loooking at all. that is why i ask you what is the differences in your meaning of barbie doll and hot chick. You know everyone don't describe the same. that is why am asking you to be clear on your meaning, no need to get smart about my IQ

Posted by babytammy.

You are right, there are lot of people who think Ash is not beautiful and a maximum percentage of them are women(based on my personal experience). Ash rated as the most beautiful woman, does not mean she got 100% votes, she got the maximum votes and the rest of the contestants got lesser votes, which when cumulated against the votes got by Ash will make her votes look insignificant. There itself you can see that there are lots of people who think that Ash is not the most beautiful woman. But we go by democratic rules, whoever gets the max votes is the winner, well I know there are exceptions like George Bush.

I don't want Linux!!!!!
"I don't want Linux!", this is a statement I heard from a small business owner yesterday. My laptop is under repair and I gave it to a local repair shop www.csicomputers.net and its asual taking a while to get it done. Yesterday while playing raquet ball, in the middle I happend to call Nick(Nassar) to find about the status of the laptop and in the process started talking about his website. I was surprised to know that, he actually has a website, which he hates a lot, b'cos its gross and it does not generate revenue. His website is hosted on Linux server and he cannot do any file/data uploads/updates easily. I went to the website and I can clearly see that its a real amtuer job. The sad part is that he hates the site so much, that he does not even print the website's address in his news/pamplet print advertisements.

Later in the discussion, I was talking to him about redoing the website and he told "I don't want Linux".

I am sure there are hundred's of thousands of small business owners in the same situation who thinks if they buy a Window's machine all problems will be solved. Linux has to marketed so that all these potential buyers should be able to use it easily.

Anycomments on how to deal with this situation?

Sun’s Java gives Spirit an easy life

The same piece of software that lets people all around the world play video games on their cell phones is now letting scientists drive the ultimate remote-controlled car across the surface of Mars. Java, the software developed by Sun Microsystems Inc as a universal platform for Internet applications, gave NASA a low-cost and easy-to-use option for running Spirit, the robotic rover that rolled onto the planet’s surface on Thursday in search of signs of water and life.

For the next three months, NASA scientists and engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena will plot Spirit’s wanderings with the Java-based Science Activity Planner that operates like a digital Gran Turismo.

‘‘It takes all the raw data in the mission data base and builds a 3-D terrain you can spin around and zoom in,’’ Gene Chalfant, JPL technical staffer, said. With the same point-and-click skills one would need for, say, online shopping, the NASA team will plan Spirit’s daily activities, page through voluminous data and communicate. ‘‘It’s a sandbox, in a way, to try different ideas’’, Chalfant said. ‘‘You pick the rock you want to investigate and command the rover to move there and the rover figures out the best way.’’

The team made virtually no changes to an online version of the programme, dubbed Maestro, that lets space nuts page through panoramic colour images, check out the rover’s wheel-mounted hazard cameras or plan a rover mission just like real scientists.

The simulated rover drives on a 3-D Model of the martian terrain as precise as the one used by the NASA mission.

‘‘(Scientists) do exactly the same thing you can do,’’ Chalfant said. Java’s journey from mundane to extraterrestrial began nearly a decade ago when JPL scientists began noodling with the programming language to create a command and control system for the 1995 Mars Sojourner, said James Gosling.

The JPL team showed Sun what they had done, and Gosling, a vice-president and fellow at the Santa Clara, California-based software and systems developer, was hooked.

‘‘I’m a geek anyway, so it sucks me in,’’ Gosling said. He spent so much time at the Pasadena space laboratory that he became an advisory board member. ‘‘They are doing things that people think are science fiction,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s a place to go to have your mind blown. It’s hard to find a government agency ... where people are living their dreams.’’

Although Java’s data-handling capabilities initially attracted NASA, the code’s ability to transcend the many platforms used by mission scientists and engineers sold the space agency, Gosling said.

‘‘They can have scientists all over the world looking at the data but collaboratively deciding on the way the mission should proceed,’’ Gosling said. ‘‘They are all speaking different languages when they talk to the rover but everybody in the control room is using Java.’’

Its exciting to know the Java is doing wonders across, it worked wonders during 911 and now its showing it miracles with Rover. I am excited to be a java geek.

World Anti-Globalization Converence - Mumbai
About 75,000 anti-globalisation activists are gathering in India's biggest city Mumbai for the World Social Forum which begins on Friday.
The activists represent some 2,500 non-governmental groups.

The anti-globalisation meeting - the fourth of its kind - is being held in Asia for the first time.

Discussions planned for the six-day event include issues like imperialist globalisation, international security and civil rights.

Largely a group of trade unionists, non-governmental organisations and leftist parties, the World Social Forum (WSF) was conceived as an international forum against economic globalisation.

I don't think on a first hand I am going to support this forum, I am beneficiary at this moment, I will have to see what they are upto and what their reasons are and whether they are valid or not and then decide.

RSS agrees Muslims are also patriots
The RSS and Jamiat-I-Ulema-E-Hind on Wednesday agreed that the basis of patriotism was “not religion but the country” as the leaderships of the two outfits met here to lay groundwork for a full-fledged dialogue.
RSS leader Indresh Kumar met Jamiat leaders Abdul Hamid Nomani and Niaz Ahmed Farooqui for about two hours at the latter’s headquarters after which a brief joint statement was issued. The talks at Jamiat headquarters marked the first-ever visit by any of Sangh Parivar leaders to the Muslim organisation’s office.

“During the talks, we found that the country, ancestors and culture of all of us is the same. The focus of our discussions was that the basis of patriotism or nationalism is not religion but the country,” said the statement read out by Indresh Kumar.

Now US workers to be trained to replace Indians!
The US state of Arizona has set aside $3 million as a grant to train its own workers and counter dependence on highly skilled foreign workers, particularly from India.

The H1-B Training Grant for the state's Maricopa county from the US Department of Labour's Employment and Training Administration is for a specific goal: to reduce businesses' dependence on Indian H1-B workers.

"Companies are saying that our domestic US workers do not have the skill set that foreigners do," said Suzanne Ledy, business projects coordinator for the Maricopa Workforce Connections Centre in Phoenix and the grant manager for the latest proposal.

"It (the programme) is to increase the skill level of our domestic workers so we can ultimately replace H1-B workers," she said.

Key role for India in US space program
India, which aims to send an unmanned mission to the moon by 2008, will take part in US plans to send humans back to the moon and eventually to Mars, ISRO chairman Madhavan Nair said Thursday.

President George W Bush unveiled plans Wednesday for a US return to the moon as early as 2015, saying a lunar base would be a launch pad for manned missions to Mars and "across our solar system".

"India will certainly participate in the US initiative because we don't want to lag behind in the exploration of space," Indian Space Research Organisation chairman Nair told AFP.

But he said the extent of India's role had still to be determined. "We'll firm up our plans for space exploration after bilateral discussions with them," he said in Bangalore.

"Our role will depend on the progress of the dialogue with the US."

Indian, US space agency and other officials would discuss areas of cooperation at a workshop in Bangalore June 24-27 that would focus on "peaceful exploration of space," he said.

Kisan call centres
Via World is Green : Suhit Anantula's Blog on Rural India: Kisan call centres

On January 20, the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, will formally unveil a dedicated `Jaikisan' television channel, an FM radio service and, to top it all, a call centre facility for agriculturists. According to official sources, the proposed farm channel involves both narrowcasting using Doordarshan's wide terrestrial network as well as beaming through the Indira Gandhi National Open University's (IGNOU) satellite/cable TV infrastructure. The projected outlay: Rs 350 crore over the next three years.
"The intention is to have programming in local languages specific to each State's agro-climatic regime. There is no point in broadcasting information regarding timely sowing of wheat or late blight in potato to a rubber farmer in Kerala.

Finally, in an apparent bid to dispel the impression that IT and telecom are only for the `classes', there is the move to establish Kisan call centres, enabling farmers to obtain crop, weather and price-related information through phone.

All the farmer has to do is dial `1101''1551', a toll-free number, and post his query.

This is a very good thing, still radio reaches more masses than TV and actually having a station for farmers is a wonderful thing. Bottom line is there need to be some real dedicated individuals working on this, instead of having beuroctatic hands meddlign with that, its better if NGO's and professionals in the fields are given more power and access to use it to broadcast their message.

Rural Hosipitals
The new corporate hospitals set up as adjuncts to medical colleges in the rural areas are in a Catch-22 situation.
Discouraged by the impression that their treatment charges would be exorbitant, local patients are reluctant to come in. But the Medical Council of India (MCI) guidelines mandate a minimum number of patients treated in these hospitals.

So what are the poor managements to do to avoid losing their licences? Hire some patients for window dressing when the Medical Council of India inspection team comes for an inspection.

Who is to be blamed for this situation — the managements, the government or the Medical Council of India? According to Dr K Shashidhar, managing director of the Kamineni Institute of Medical Sciences, Narketpally, the government must rethink its approach to issuing essentiality certificates for new medical colleges-cumhospitals.

D/FW marks 30 years since first flight
DallasNews.com | Dallas-Fort Worth | New This Hour

A ceremony Wednesday commemorated the 30th anniversary of the first flight into Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport -- American Airlines No. 341 from New York, with stops in Memphis, Tenn., and Little Rock, Ark.
"It was a flight that ignited the economic engine for North Texas, and began the ascension of D/FW International Airport to the third busiest airport in the world," board chairman Max Wells told several hundred employees. "I can honestly say our early dreamers dreamed big, but I don't think even they could have envisioned what D/FW has become in the short span of three decades."

A joint airport for Dallas and Fort Worth was first proposed in 1927, but the project didn’t get under way until $35 million in revenue bonds were sold in 1968 to finance construction. The dedication ceremony was in 1973, and the first flight was marked in January 1974, according to the airport’s history.

Very interesting to know, well 30 years, I am sure DFW has made long strides in progress, this is one of the best cities in USA, looks like a satellite city, except for the horrible summer heat, a very nice city which developed at a vey fast pace. Well, if you talk to people in their 30's and above who are born and brought up here, they tell that they used to see horses on these roads a decade or two back, now the roads a filled with latest and greatest cars. People coming from other parts of country, just keep wondering looking at the no. of new cars that stroll of the road on a day to day basis.

Indian cricket fans set to 'invade' Pakistan
Welcome to SIFY News

With diplomatic relations on the mend, thousands of Indian cricket fans are expected to travel to Pakistan to witness the first Test series in that country in 14 years beginning in March.

And after Indian captain Sourav Ganguly's declaration in Australia that his team is committed to tour Pakistan, setting aside earlier security threats, tour operators to cricket officials are all hoping for a virtual invasion by Indians.

The prospect of Sachin Tendulkar - who began his career in Pakistan way back in 1989 -- taking on tearaway Shoaib Akhtar, or Virender Sehwag clobbering spinners and speedsters, is too tempting to resist for Indian fans, who have increasingly begun to make their presence felt in international matches.

And with Indian fans ready to travel to places as far as Australia and South Africa, Pakistan - a country millions of Indians have never been and are curious to see - would be a tempting and economical destination.

The series will also give an opportunity for thousands of divided families in India and Pakistan to meet their relatives after a long, long time.

The fact that it will be India's first full Test tour to Pakistan since 1989 has added to the excitement and enthusiasm of cricketers and Indian fans.

Raj Patel, Indian bags 100 patents at Xerox
siliconindia

India is clearly the flavour of the times we are living in, even in the field of patents. An Indian scientist working for the Xerox Corporation in Canada, Raj Patel, earned a rare distinction when he was awarded his 100th patent in the US towards December end, reports an Indian daily.

In fact, he became only the second scientist in the company to have bagged 100 international patents. Patel, a 25-year veteran of the Xerox Research Centre of Canada, is one of the company's top experts in toner technology.

His most recent patent No. 6,664,017 was awarded for expanding Xerox's document security know-how. The invention covers two new ways to apply glossy white toner marks - either visible to the eye at a certain angle or visible only under ultraviolet light - on documents for security or authentication purposes. Key potential uses for the invention include sports tickets, manufacturers' coupons and currency.

China will be troublemaker in 20 years, warns ex-US Senator
China will be troublemaker in 20 years, warns ex-US Senator : HindustanTimes.com

Former US senator Larry Pressler on Tuesday said Washington should be wary of China because it would become "a troublemaker" in 20 years.
"China is militaristic, expansionist. They want hegemony on their borders," Pressler, author of the Pressler Amendment that prohibited sale of US arms to Pakistan, said in an interaction with reporters in Kolkata.

"They are building a big navy, unnecessarily. China will be a troublemaker in 20 years. I hope the US administration will take notice," said Pressler, who retired as republican senator from South Dakota.

Pressler, who has turned a businessman and public speaker since retiring from politics in 1997, was reacting to suggestions from reporters that China's small arms industry was surreptitiously feeding weapon requirements of Indian rebel groups.

He stressed the need for the US to establish "stronger relations" with India. "India should be the centrepiece of US foreign policy in this part of the world."

Washington should "embrace" India as a trade partner and have a free trade agreement with it, he remarked.

Speaking on US foreign policy, Pressler, 61, said: "The US government is more comfortable in dealing with dictators than democracies.

So true the statement regarding the relationship with dictators. Oldest democracy in the world deals with dictators b'cos they are easy to work with and they can get their point across fast, dealing with democrazy is a difficult path as there are lots of people to deal with.

Name Tag at Marriage Function
Via Rajesh Jain

I recently attended a marriage. I dread attending wedding receptions because I invariably end up meeting people and having conversations with them without figuring out who they are. So, much of the conversation ends up trying to decipher clues as to their identify. The problem is compounded when they ask “Remember me” and you reply “Oh Yes, Of course I do” and they go on to ask “So, who am I?”
I went through a similar experience in a reception I attended recently. I talked with a travel agency owner thinking him to be a stock broker friend. Having realised my bloomer before the other person did, I started thinking of what could be done differently so I didn’t have to go through this again. Imagine if everyone were given name tags – just like the way it happens when we go to conferences and trade shows. While I agree that marriages are more informal settings, one of the purposes of these elaborate functions (especially in India) is to also foster meetings among friends and family in an otherwise busy life. So, why not make things easier by giving name tags at the time of walking in to the reception venue. In most cases, the set of people coming is known well in advance, so the tags could be kept ready in advance. Marriage meetings would suddenly be fun, less of a mental strain and embarrassment-free!

Well, its kind of interesting thought, well atleast should be implemented in all official meeting etc.

Sardar Ji Jokes
A policeman was interrogating 3 SARDARS who were training to become
detectives. To test their skills in recognizing a suspect, he shows the
first SARDAR a picture for 5 seconds and then hides it.

"This is your suspect, how would you recognize him?"
The first SARDAR answers, "That's easy, we'll catch him fast because he
only has one eye!"
The policeman says, "Well...uh...that's because the picture I showed is
his side profile."

Slightly flustered by this ridiculous response, he flashes the picture for
5 seconds at the second SARDAR and asks him, "This is your suspect, how
would you recognize him?"
The second SARDAR smiles, flips his hair and says, "Ha! He'd be too easy
to catch because he only has one ear!"

The policeman angrily responds, "What's the matter with you two?? Of
course only one eye and one ear are showing because it's a picture of his side
profile! Is that the best answer you can come up with?"

Extremely frustrated at this point, he shows the picture to the third
SARDAR and in a very testy voice asks, "This is your suspect, how would
you recognize him?
He quickly adds, "Think hard before giving me a stupid answer."

The SARDAR looks at the picture intently for a moment and says, "The
suspect wears contact lenses."

The policeman is surprised and speechless because he really doesn't know
himself if the suspect wears contacts or not.
"Well, that's an interesting answer. Wait here for a few minutes while I
check his file and I'll get back to you on that."

He leaves the room and goes to his office, checks the suspect's file in
his computer, and comes back with a beaming smile on his face.

"Wow! I can't believe it. It's TRUE! The suspect does in fact wear contact
lenses. Good work! How were you able to make such an astute observation?"

"That's easy," the SARDAR replied. "He can't wear regular glasses because
he only has one eye and one ear."

bolo ta ra ra ra*..

Gurley: "(1) Evolution is a model or decent metaphor to think about business, and companies evolve with their tools. (2) technologies are business weapons, but there are no guarantees. (3) You can't choose not to play without risking extinction-heading out onto the field with a wooden racquet is a really bad idea."

Bezos: "I personally believe that with respect to the Internet we are at about the 1908 Hurley Washing Machine stage...We haven't invented the equivalent of the off switch, we haven't invented the electric outlet, people are still having to choose between phone calls and using their web browser...As the fundamental technology advances, as disk drives become even cheaper, as bandwidth becomes even cheaper, as CPUs become even cheaper, as the raw ingredients in our business continue to get cheaper and cheaper we will layer on top of that innovation to figure out how to take the now much cheaper raw ingredients and do something special that actually serves customers...What I see is that the rate of innovation on the Internet in general to my eye appears to be accelerating rather than decelerating. I don't know how long that will continue. I think it's very early, and we're basically in 1! 908."

India names Sania Mirza its brand ambassador in year of girl child
Sania Mirza named India's brand ambassador for 2004 : HindustanTimes.com

India has named teenage tennis sensation Sania Mirza as its "brand ambassador" for 2004 — the year of the girl child.

Health Minister Sushma Swaraj handed over a cheque of Rs 5 lakh to Mirza, who won the Wimbledon junior girls' doubles title last year, and projected her as the brand ambassador of the Family Welfare Department.

"A day has to come when the birth of a girl child is celebrated with pomp and joy all over the country and Sania will remain a glittering example for the importance of girl child," Swaraj said in her brief address.

Sania said she owed it all to her parents who had taken a lot of pains to enable her to pursue her career.

"I hope parents would give their best to their wards for the child's all round development," she added.

HMMM GUYS AND GIRLS,

SEE WHEN YOU SAY DREAM GIRL ITS A DIFFERENT THING.

WELL, WHAT I WOULD REALLY SUGGEST IS THAT, TAKE SANIA MIRZA AS YOUR INSPIRATION AND STRIVE HARD IN YOUR CHOSEN FIELD JUST LIKE SANIA DID IN TENNIS, BY WAKING UP EARLY IN THE MORNING AND PRACTICING RELENTLESSLY THROUGH YEARS AND CONCENTRATING IN ACHIEVING PERFECTION, AND SHE MADE THE DREAM OF HER AND THE WHOLE INDIA COME TRUE.

YOU GUYS/GILRS ALSO JUST DRAW THAT INNATE ENERGY FROM YOURSELVES AND GO OUT THERE AND FIGHT IT OUT, MAKE A MARK AND GET YOUR NAME WRITTEN IN THE HISTORY.

BELIEVE ME YOU CAN BECOME A SANIA OR A SACHIN IF YOU PURSUE YOU DREAMS. YOU WILL FAIL A LOT OF TIMES, BUT REMEMBER TO MAKE EVERY FAILURE A LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR YOU, AND NEVER QUIT. THE MOST SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE LIKE SANIA HAVE FACED LOTS OF FAILURES BEFORE THEY ACHIEVED THE PERFECTION WHERE THEY DON'T FAIL ANYMORE AND YOU MIGHT HAVE OBSERVED THAT THEY STILL STRIVE DAY IN AND DAY OUT TO IMPROVE ON THEIR PERFECTION SO THAT THEY CAN GO MORE PLACES AND MAKE MORE DREAMS COME TRUE.

EINSTEIN FAILED 10000 THOUSAND TIMES BEFORE HE FOUND THE RIGHT WAY TO MAKE A BULB AND 10000 WAYS NOT TO MAKE A BULB. SO START COUNTING YOUR FAILURES AND SUCCESSES MAKE YOUR DREAM COME TRUE.

Hi Sania. This is Sriram. For the past two years I've been watching u play tennis. everyone say that u r playing like Clijsters or Henin. Since I've been watching tennis right from Steffi and Seles's period i think u have the potential that matches u with Mary Pierce.

On the negative side u get carried away a little bit when u play. This makes u to lose lot of tournaments. Pierce also had the same feature. u have a very good temperament to become the world number one. Since Iam a final year engineering student , Iam not able to follow Ur schedules this year.

I think I'll be placed in Wipro, Hyderabad. Anyway have a nice day. U have a good future. Rest in my next mail. Please do reply to this mail. I think we'll meet in Hyderabad. Byeeeeeeee. Rest in person.

Hey Sania,

You have made us Indians proud to say that we too have such great youngsters on roll right at the moment. I could watch your only match with Serena, where I felt that you were much stronger n perfect in forehand and baseline shots. The way you keep on the volley rolling just shows your determination to win every moment.

Good going girl, India believes in you. Now that you have made us proud just by being there n starting a good show, i am pretty sure that you will continue making us proud throughout your sports career.

And most important, try being a good human being even after your popularity because thats the only way you can bring love and respect to yourself apart from the professional success.

Wish you my best wishes 4 all ur future endeavours and may you bring great name to India.

Hey Sania,
Always remeber 1 thing :
JUST BELEIVE IN YOURSELF ...!!!
& YOU CAN ACHIEVE WHATEVER YOU HAVE DREAMED OF...
In tensed situations / tough games never lose your confidence, always have faith in god & yourself.
Don't look at player against whome you are playing, whether he/she is a big player or not, that does not matter, always remember that, you youself are a good player too...
& if someone criticises you, just take some good points from it & don't think on the unnecessary issues...ok ?
All the Best for your FUTURE !!!
Take Care.
God bless you !!!

face of Indian sports. Sooner or later people
will forget cricket. Yes that,s what is needed
for us. We will get nothing from cricket, except
for making these stupids richer and richer. None
of could give a single rupee to the tsunami victims. stupids! We all should hope for a day when Sania wins a grand slam title for India.
That will be the end of cricket.

Hats off SANIA.

'I can't believe my husband did this to my daughter'
'I can't believe my husband did this to my daughter' - Newindpress.com

Ten days after the barbaric torture of a mother and daughter, this sleepy town in western UP is seething with anger but the police have managed to arrest only one person and his family members are on the run.
That's why 27-year-old Jyoti and her four-year-old daughter Shreya, ready for discharge from Delhi's AIIMS, don't want to leave the hospital. Jyoti, reliving the horror, is scared that she will be targeted again.

She lost half a finger and her face was cut by her in-laws. Her daughter is recovering after a vagina repair surgery. According to Dr Neena Malhotra, the child was brought to the hospital with a 4-cm `perineal tear' after being inserted with a broken wiper reportedly by her father and grandfather. ``The girl is doing ok and is ready for discharge,'' Dr Malhotra says. ``She has to pass the urine and stool through an incision done in her abdomen as both her urinary and anal passages were damaged. A closure surgery would be done after six weeks and she might be well after that,'' she adds.

Jyoti, meanwhile, has another reason to be at the hospital. She has asked the doctors to abort her two-month pregnancy. ``I can't let a child come to this world knowing how brutal a father and his family can be with their four-year-old daughter,'' says Jyoti.

These filthy pople should be shot deat in public, so that nobody would do that thing again.

Indian tech pros send shivers down America's spine
Indian tech pros send shivers down America's spine - The Economic Times

Unknowingly – and unintentionally – the Indian professional has sparked off a major economic apprehension in the US among policy-influencers.

The basic question, of course, is whether the outflow of jobs from America to India, despite lowering costs hugely for companies, is good for the US. The immediate concern is the backlash from people who have lost their jobs, which can escalate into a major issue in an election year.

Some American economists, backed by conservative politicians are not asking for a ban on offshoring in as many words, but they’re arguing that the principles of free world trade – which Washington uses to pry open markets around the world – are no longer applicable when jobs start flowing out.

Of course, with tech CEOs from America already having warned Washington not to pass legislation against exporting jobs to India and other countries – since their bottomlines benefit greatly from such moves.

The arguments on both sides are based on David Ricardo's classic theory of comparative advantage –

Reid clean bowled by India's unity
Reid clean bowled by India's unity - The Times of India

Bowling coach Bruce Reid, who did not give the Indians much of a chance before the Test series against Australia, is now an admirer of the team and believes other Test nations could learn a lot from them.
Reid initially did not think the Indians would offer much challenge to the Australians but he is now a convert and admires the work ethics of the visitors.

"I was so impressed with their mindset. There is much to learn from the Indians for the other Test nations," Reid said.

"They were just not worried about individual reputations. They just played as they saw it. At team meetings they barely mentioned the names of the Australian bowlers.

Well, a wonderful phenomenon to see India changing its face for better in each and every field in the international arena.

Let’s unite on outsourcing: Shourie to Asians
Let’s unite on outsourcing: Shourie to Asians

“The Asian countries should take a concerted action against the outsourcing backlash by the US, Europe and Australia to challenge the growing threat of protectionism while charting out a three-point agenda for the Asian nations on taking it to the masses,” Arun Shourie, Union IT and Communication Minister said here at the inauguration of the Second Asian IT Ministers' Summit.

“Outsourcing backlash is a common concern now in the Asian countries, we should take a concerted view and action on the outsourcing backlash unleashed by US, Europe and Australia and face these challenges with a strong counter force.”

Shourie said that similar arguments and cases also come up in WTO as certain countries can not go on expecting opening up of goods and services from others while protecting their own services and markets.

A good move in my opinion, need to unite on common issues, so that in the long term we will have more rapport with in asia and can work for more free trade zones.

US IT firms against outsourcing backlash
Welcome to SIFY News

Even as US lawmakers are targeting outsourcing of jobs to countries such as India and China, leading technology companies warned Congress and the Bush administration against imposing new trade restrictions that would hit global competitiveness.

The warning came in a report by the Washington-based Computer Systems Policy Project (CSPP), the trade group for leading technology companies, including Intel Corp, IBM, Dell and Hewlett-Packard (HP). It also came after new research by IDC that information technology sourcing to low-wage countries will more than quadruple by 2007.

The CSPP said restrictive policies would do little to resolve America's long-standing problems affecting its global competitive such as low-scoring schools and inadequate spending on research.

Putting up barriers, the companies said, would results in retaliation from affected countries and even an all-out trade war.

''There is no job that is America's God given right anymore. We have to compete for jobs,'' said HP CEO Carly Flornia.

It has been said that France is politically opposed to U.S. policy, while China and India are econically opposed. The lie is that France is also economically opposed. Go to

I'll put my resume up against any 10 employed IT workers, here or in India, and it will beat the pants off of 9 of them. American's are passed over, not because of poor IT education or skills, but because we have mortgages and can't afford to take jobs that pay enough for a grass hut somewhere in the 3rd world. Education is just corporate America's excuse for being greedy. MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Purdue.... all the best IT schools are in the US. And I will be perfectly honest. No matter what "Institute" they graduate from, in 15 years in the IT business, I have yet to find a graduate of an Indian university that was any better than mediocre. But hey, corporate America has spoken. The problem is, no matter what the next hot thing is, you can bet that before the first grads in it leave their first job, there wont be any second job for them in the US. Take up art guys. Take up singing. Being poor is a lot better if you are doing something expressive.

U R Bound To Bounce Back When Grounded
Its amazing to see how one can bounce back when one is grounded.

Well, I have this Linux system installed on desktop at home, but when I tried to connect to internet through my Router, I had all kinds of problems and I gave it up, thinking that I will find somebody who knows Linux and help me fix it. Well, due to my laptop being under repair and my mind getting completely idle, I though about working on the Linux system, and started the desktop and found out that I forgot the login password, what worst can happen, well then I reinstalled the whole OS again and started digging arround and you know what in a couple of hours I was able to set up the network and able to access internet. Well, there is a catch, I am able to ping all kinds of sites out there from shell window, but somehow the browser never opens up the sites, i know they are trying to send request to the sites out there, but somehow not getting any response back. I will have to dig into that too.

But, if I was not grounded, may be I would not have setup the basic network also, may be the next few months. Its good to fail and get grounded sometimes, you will know how to bounce back. Its true that failures are stepping stones for success.

Aishwarya's 'Chaos' with Streep to rock America!
Welcome to SIFY News

Aishwarya Rai might soon be a star in North America with her taking on the role of the leading lady in a North American film titled 'Chaos'.

Movie bosses have been scouting locations for the film in Vancouver, but nothing has been finalized as yet.

Aishwarya will co-star with Hollywood actress, Meryl Streep, who recently stood out in the role of an elderly, bespectacled and Yiddish-accented rabbi in HBO's 'Angels In America', according to a report in the Daily Mail.

'Chaos' is the English remake of critically acclaimed French director, Coline Serreau's social drama revolving around a bourgeois French couple who accidentally witnesses the violent beating of a young prostitute played by the Bollywood queen, by her pimps.

While the French woman played by Streep empathizes with the prostitute's suffering, her selfish husband disapproves of his wife's concern.

Streep's character traces the prostitute to the hospital where she is recovering from the beating and the two gradually develop a deep bond.

The French woman helps the prostitute find a new life, and the prostitute helps the woman find a new identity.

The Frenchwoman realizes that her life has been changed forever and she can never return to her selfish husband and son.

Playing a prostitute doesn't mean someone's gonna take their clothes off. Did you not read the plot of the movie properly?

I TINK ASH LOOKS MY MY GIRL FRIEND NEELAM I THINK ASH IS WICKED STAR SHE IS GREAT

Posted by ARSHAD.

I don't think Aishwarya is ready for this type of role, as it is one of her first ventures into Hollywood movies, which are of course very different fron the typical Bollywood films. Also, she might lose a lot of respect in the traditional countries she is famous in, like Pakistan, India, etc. Personally, I don't like the fact that she will be starring as a prostitute. Aishwarya appearance doesn't even fit that role if you think about it.

many actresses have done prostitute roles and have not lost any respect. Kareena Kapoor did in Chameli where she got great reviews. Its roles like these where you can portray your acting abilites.

Oh my GOD!!! I cant believe the posts im reading! There are people who dont give credit to a very beautifull and extremely talented actress like Aishwarya Rai!! "not remove clothes..." these people didnt even read about the script. I, as an non resident indian, think that its a great honour for the indian comunnity to have Aish in Hollywood doing something different ans showing those "Gore´s" what we are really about!

Aishwarya Rai is the most beautiful woman in the world and i agree with Faical. It is an honor to allow Aish to be here in Hollywood!!!! She is so unbelievably hot its not even funny!!!!! i love u Aish!!!!

Ash is simply the best! She can play any role.Personally I feel playing a prostitute will be a challenge.

Posted by Aaliya.

I'm not Indian but I understand a bit about Indian and Bollywood culture. Last night I watched Bride & Prejudice on DVD, and was bowled over by Ash's beauty and performance. I have spent a few hours today finding out more about her on the net and am now bowled over by her intelligence too. This is probably a very good movie for her to make an impact on Hollywood with. I am sure she will be mindful of her reputation in India and not show parts of her body or perform acts that could ruin her reputation at home. But the plot and character sound strong and challenging and I'm sure she will be superb. Would love to see her in more British rather than American movies though!

Parsi Roots Are In Sanskrit
Well, today I met a Iranian guy, well will let you know the story at the end. And we started talking about Iran, he told me that Old Parsi is basically Sanskrit, that was one heck of a information to know. The parsi spoken now also has a lot of Sanskrit influence in it. He told that the peeple from Iran who wants to learn Sanskrit goes to Indian universities to study it, well thats a no brainer anyway, anybody who wants to study Sanskrit will come to India. But thats a very interesting fact to know. He was so happy to know that we always drink Irani Chai (Tea) at hyderabad.

Well, here's the story how I met him, my laptop's power module is broken, and I took it to BestBuy and they directed me to CSI Computers and the Iranian dude, Nassar Bhai, told me that the part would cost $50/- and service charge is $250/- b'cos the part soldered to mother board and he has to do the soldering himself. I was taken aback and went out enquiring about that with someother guys, and they told the mother board need to be changed, hmmmm, well, I cannot afford that right now, its gonna put a hole of about $1000/- in my pocket, well finally I had to give it up and take it back to him.

Lesson Learned: Don't by stuff from HP, Sony etcc. companies. Toshiba and IBM are the best deals out there to buy. Toshiba comes in affordable range and IBM comes in high end range. Well, I thught of a better idea, better buy an assembled piece, so that it costs about 500 to 700 dollars which will work as good as the branded ones. Let me see what I am gonna go for next time. Anyway, I am just wondering how to live with out a laptop for next few days.

SOAPS for NRI's at Pravasi Bharatiya Divas
Welcome to SIFY News

PravasiBharatiya Divas

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced that Indian corporates will be permitted to make overseas investments up to 100 per cent of their networth and go global in the agriculture sector.
The government has also decided to set up a Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra in New Delhi, for which a seed grant of Rs 25 crore and suitable land would be given, Vajpayee said in his inaugural address at the second Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Conference in New Delhi on Friday.

In yet another announcement, the Prime Minister said children of Indian workers in the Gulf and South East Asia would be provided one-third reservation out of the 15 per cent supernumerary seats across different disciplines in educational instutions.

Nice to see, that govt. is talkign about agriculture, what a relief, there need to be lots of funds to be invested in Agriculture sector, there is a dire need for a new Green Revolution in India and at the same time, there is need for stringent control over the agricultural companies/products which take advantage of uneducated farmers and give them a ride for their money. Will NRI's be able to make a difference? Well, just wondering how many NRI's will be interested in the field of agriculture.

Chameli Not Upto Mark
A night with Chameli? Nah - The Times of India

The phenomenon of the so-called experimental cinema being paraded in the guise of multiplex movies finally seems to have found its bearings in Chameli . For a tastefully-done Chameli doesn’t succumb to truisms.

Kapoor as the prostitute is about as credible as Shah Rukh Khan would be as a college student. And we aren’t even talking of her star persona coming in the way. Even as a drop-dead gorgeous streetwalker, she fails to convince with very well-attempted acting that quite doesn’t make the cut. Kapoor’s best moment clearly is in the stylishly done Bhage re man number, in which she prances in the rain with a child's abandon.

The undoing of the film is the screenplay, with sketchy characterisations, which do not convince as the protagonists are drawn towards each other. Some clichés, however, remain. Like Chameli being the exaggerated good Samaritan, who wins over Aman.

So, Chameli remains at best a well-tried experiment, not a film which plays out in your mind once you step out.

'Hungry' for lectures, girl goes on strike
Welcome to SIFY News

At a time when most colleges are worrying about the dwindling number of students attending lectures and absenteeism, Shirin Soorya (20) has proved herself to be a rarity in the student fraternity.
She has threatened to go on a hunger strike after she found out that the college she thought would shape her future does not conduct lectures at all.

The Shri Bhagubhai Mafatlal Polytechnic at Vile Parle (W), run by the Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal, offers a three-year DOEACC B-level computer course. Shirin, a resident of Adarsh Nagar, Lokhandwala, passed the aptitude test and interview, and took admission for the course on July 16, 2003.

To fund her education, her parents took a loan from the Standard Chartered Bank to pay the fees of Rs 24,000 for the first year. They even took an additional loan of Rs 27,000 to buy a computer for Shirin.

But till date, the college has not conducted any lectures. Though there are 18 students enrolled for the course, all of them except Shirin are 'preparing' for their first semester exams that will begin on January 10, 2004.

What a patehtic state, there are thousands of intelligent people out there looking for jobs, and institutions like these pocket money and ditch the students, they can employ those genius guys out there and provide education. When are these educational institutions going to see education not as business, instead as a tool to make india a super power. When is the govt. going to get down and do everything necessary to crub such institutions.

KUDOS SHIRIN , I WISH I SHOULD HAVE DONE WHAT YOU ARE DOING WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE. INDIA NEEDS MORE CITIZENS WITH GUTS LIKE YOU!

Reasons why the General has to deliver now
In October 2001, Pervez Musharraf turned against the jehadis in Afghanistan and became a member of President George Bush’s coalition against terrorism. On January 6 in Islamabad he announced his intention of turning against terrorists targeting India .

But the big question is will he, or won’t he ?

Most Indians thinking about the outcome of the Islamabad summit have that nagging feeling that they have heard it all before, and that the General will go back on his commitments as indeed he has in the past.

But he is not likely to. The two attacks on Musharraf have made it clear that the terrorists targeting India now had him in their cross-hairs. They have thus become the unintended catalysts in promoting the Indo-Pak thaw. On one hand, they clearly drew the battle-lines in Pakistan between the die-hard jehadis and the Pakistani establishment. On the other, they brought home to New Delhi the seriousness of the jehadi threat to Musharraf. In othe words, they helped India and Pakistan developing a joint stake in their elimination.

Indian Kid Rapper Born
Via the Kolkata Libertarian

You guys remember Sashwat Singh, a sad tale of zero-tolerance meets intolerant bureaucrats..? 15 year old gets suspended, principal had kops follow him from school to his house, who confisticated his home computer because he used it to write "violent" rap songs, dissing his parents and the Holy Father, er, All-knowing Alpha, er, Dickwad Principal.. Well, as it turns out, kid bro does in fact have a CD out now. From reader Lance brown comes this link where you can download his album, plus a bunch of other "in-your-face" raps about the school principal and other fun stuff

When will the nanny-state fascists who seem to be running our public schools realize, the more they squeeze, the more they slip through your fingers. Earth to principal Tom, you have already lost the respect of nearly all your charges. Most of them will keep quiet, just to get through high school, graduate, get into college and as far away from you and your cadre of jack-booted (or is it birkenstockked) thugs as possible. One wonders where John Ashcroft gets his ideas from, why he might think he can actually get away with eroding civil liberties on his end? Because the countrys' largest unionized, bullishly leftist workforce is on his side. They have no qualms about cracking down on civil liberties as long as it's for their pet cause of political correctness. "Columbine..", they yell as loudly as they can, hoping no one will pause to think logically after that, "..oh will somebody think of Columbine.."

In the meanwhile, go show some support for Sashwat, will ya?

Gandhi ran a gas station down in St. Louis
CNN.com - Hillary Clinton 'truly regrets' Gandhi joke - Jan. 7, 2004

Guess who said that - Hillary Clinton, should we take it as a joke.

The New York Democrat made the remark at a fund-raiser Saturday. During an event here for Senate candidate Nancy Farmer, Clinton introduced a quote from Gandhi by saying, "He ran a gas station down in St. Louis."
And here comes a Muslim guy defending saying:

"I don't think she was, in any way, trying to demean Mahatma Gandhi," Naef said. "To be generous to her, I would say it was a poor attempt at humor. Perhaps I'm overly sensitive, but I find it offensive when people use stereotypes in that way."

Indians have always supported Clinton families and this is how they give it back, well she says she deeply regrets it, but just think about the core mental attitude that has been hidden all these days, its poision lying deep in there.

Finally Clinton quoted the Indian independence leader as saying: "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."

Protect Your Self From 2-Way Mirrors
Jivha - the Tongue: St.Gobain & the 2-way mirror

Some of you may have come across the Saint-Gobain “2-way mirror ad” which ran on TV sometime back. The ad showed teenage guys putting up a Saint-Gobain 2-way mirror on a rundown shack on a beach. Soon, hot-looking women in bikinis start making a beeline for the mirror on the shack(conforming to the commonly-held stereotype that women can’t resist mirrors!) and the guys are inside the shack busting their eyeballs ogling at the babes on the other side of the mirror. Of course the women don’t really know that the glass is indeed 2-way, and therein lies the supposed “punch” of the ad.

I got this mail from a friend today which purports to have information on how to tell a 2-way mirror apart from a regular one. I reproduce the same here with some minor spelling/typo corrections.

Beware of 2 Way Mirror
Please share this information with your friends, family and all. (Have you seen recent advertisement of M/S SAINT GOBAIN GLASSES shown on television? Then you must have known about 2 Way mirror)

How to determine if a mirror is 2 way or not (Not a Joke!) Not to scare you, but to make sure that you aware. Many of the hotels and textile showrooms cheat the customers this way & watch privately.

HOW TO DETECT A 2-WAY MIRROR When we visit toilets, bathrooms, hotel rooms, changing rooms, etc., how many of you know for sure that the seemingly ordinary mirror hanging on the wall is a real mirror, r actually a 2-way mirror i.e., they can see you, but you can’t see them). There have been many cases of people installing 2-way mirrors in female changing rooms or bathroom or bedrooms. It is very difficult to positively identify the surface by just looking at it. So, how do we determine with any amount of certainty what type of mirror we are looking at?

CONDUCT THIS SIMPLE TEST: Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective surface and if there is a GAP between your fingernail and the image of the nail, then it is a GENUINE mirror. However, if your fingernail DIRECTLY TOUCHES the image of your nail, then BEWARE, IT IS A 2-WAY MIRROR! (there is someone seeing you from the other side). So remember, every time you see a mirror, do the “fingernail test.” It doesn’t cost you anything. It is simple to do. This is a really good thing to do. The reason there is a gap on a real mirror, is because the silver is on the back of the mirror UNDER the glass. Whereas with a two-way mirror, the silver is on the Surface. Keep it in mind! Make sure and check every time you enter in hotel rooms.May be someone is making a film on you.

Ladies: Share this with your friends. Men: Share this with your sisters, wife, daughters, friends, colleagues, etc.

Read this for more info and scientific info.

I don’t know how true this is, but if it is then please use it for your “benefit”.

Posted by Ramdhan Yadav at 10:32 PM Perma Link | Write A Comment (1)
The fingernail test is an urban legend. Unless the two way mirror is installed backwards, it won't work. I recommend that you use a mini flashlight or laser pointer and if you can see it go through the surface of the glass, you know that it's a two-way mirror and not a regular one way mirror.

Bush Takes in All Illegal Immigrants
Calpundit: Another Trojan Horse?

I'm not really sure yet what to think of George Bush's proposed immigration reform, but I'll give you my gut reaction: it's a Trojan horse. Bush has proven himself masterful at proposing legislation in which the headline summary is "compassionate":

Under Mr. Bush's proposal, which effectively amounts to an amnesty program for illegal immigrants with jobs in the United States, an undocumented worker could apply for temporary worker status here for an unspecified number of years, with all the employee benefits, like minimum wage and due process, accorded to those legally employed.

But the fine print contains some doozies:

Under Mr. Bush's proposals, an undocumented worker and an employer would have to apply for the guest worker program hand in hand, with the employer serving as the sponsor for the worker. There would also be a fee to register for the program, but officials would not say how much that would be.

....Administration officials acknowledge that the wait for a green card could take up to six years or longer, meaning that some guest workers who apply for green cards but do not receive them before their guest worker status expires would face the prospect of being forced to leave the United States.

For the time being I'll stay on the fence about this, but it's hard not to think of Bush's proposal as just an updated version of the infamous bracero program under which millions of Mexican farm workers provided low-wage labor in U.S. fields for more than two decades after World War II. Overall, I'm not thrilled with the idea of a "guest worker" program that essentially indentures a worker to a particular employer and provides no assurance of permanent residence, so while I'm generally in favor of more liberal immigration laws, I figure we should either let immigrants in or we shouldn't and quit playing games about it.

What's more, this sounds all too typical of a Bush program, and I suspect there will be more bad news as the details are released. The Bushies rarely have the courage to push a genuinely conservative agenda, which they know is unpopular, but instead hide conservative time bombs in legislation that's clothed in the rhetoric of traditional liberalism. I suspect that this is happening yet again with this proposal, so I'll withhold judgment until I hear more about it.

Underpaid geniuses: why USA, Inc. loves H1-B pros
Underpaid geniuses: why USA, Inc. loves H1-B pros - The Economic Times

Corporate America loves the H1-B professional – one out of three is an Indian – for obvious reasons. They don’t demand salaries as high as their American counterparts with similar skills. They’re flexible in terms of location, willing to move anywhere within the country. And, critically, they have skills in fields that there aren’t enough American pros in.
That’s why, even though unemployment among highly-educated Americans rose by about 400,000 from March 2001 to March 2003, standing at 1.2 million, American companies still employed around 240,000 H1-B pros in this period – including 80,000-and-odd from India.

even when companies downsize, H1-B people are among the last to be released, if at all. That’s because they’re involved in key R&D or product development work, which cannot be stopped.

If you forget the starting salary, then, a H1-B may still be a great opportuntiy to globalise your career and your compensation. With the demand for pros from India diversifying to fields like education, life sciences and accounting, besides IT and engineering, the opportunities are immense. And since H1-B hiring moves in tandem with US growth rates, things should get better this year.

If you’re in India, though, getting a H1-B job offer may not be easy. Most recruiters use employee referrals, Internet job boards and outreach at US colleges – and prefer to hire within the US, often headhunting from other companies or picking up people from campuses. Few, if any, actually look at India to bring people over.

But if you’re in the US on a H1-B already, get ready to rock :-)

TDP Considering Mom as a Candidate
Today I was talking to mom on phone and she told that, in the enquiry done by TDP for the upcoming elections for the probable candidates in various constituencies, in the category of BC (Backward Category) members, two names came up and one of them is mom (Smt. Arunamma). It will be really exciting, if mom gets ticket, need to start collecting funds from people, gusy get ready to donate.

She actually ran for election some 15 years back when I was a kid, and I didn't have the opportunity to actually perceive the action. She ran as an independent candidate, with Elephant Symbol backed by BJP then. Well, that was a disaster, still you need to try to be in the game and finally win. Now I am so excited, its going to be lot of fun to see the action.

Hindutva on the beach
Hindutva on the beach

New Year revellers are crawling back from the beaches of BJP-ruled Goa, having cast off their clothes and inhibitions for a few days of sandy celebration. As the parties on the beach wind down, another party is being fashioned not so far away from the fun-worshippers gyrating nakedly in their shacks. In an election year, with hope in its heart and bijli sadak pani on its lips, the BJP is desperately seeking a modern identity. It is seeking an identity that is different from that frightening backward-looking anti-woman, anti-minority and anti-youth force known as Hindutva. And, curiously enough, it is in tiny Goa, where the BJP has somewhat succeeded in becoming more modern than anywhere in north India.
There are many reasons why Goa can be seen as the poster-state for a ‘modern’ BJP. Parrikar may be an RSS member, but he cannot, for fear of perennial damage to Goa’s international allure and her 2 million seasonal tourists, ever forget that he leads a republic of fiesta and susegado (good living). RSS gerontocrats may be furious at bikinis and five star hotels but they can never forget that it is precisely this that brings in massive revenue, jobs and tourism opportunities for locals. So while Hindutva gangs in Mumbai can set fire to posters of lesbian movies or disrupt fashion shows in Nasik, in Goa, hindutva must play second fiddle to the birdie dance.

In Goa, the BJP has been made more tolerant, more development-oriented, far more careful about nasty rhetoric and thus more modern than anywhere else in India. Of course, your humble columnist still doesn’t know whether the sangh parivar will ever be cool enough to invite to a beach party, but, hey, didn’t Uma Bharti recently say she wanted Madhya Pradesh to become another Goa?

All fair in politics, as long as you can get the power.

Toilet Conversation - Funny Joke
I was barely sitting down when I heard a voice from the other
stall saying: "Hi, how are you?"

I'm not the type to start a conversation in the men's restroom
but I don't know what got into me, so I answered, somewhat embarrassed,
"Doin' just fine!"

And the other guy says: "So what are you up to?"

What kind of question is that? At that point, I'm thinking this
is too bizarre so I say: "Uhhh, I'm like you, just traveling!"

At this point I am just trying to get out as fast as I can when I
hear another question. "Can I come over?"

Ok, this question is just too weird for me but I figured I could
just be polite and end the conversation. I tell him, "No........I'm a
little busy right now!!!"

Then I hear the guy say nervously...

"Listen, I'll have to call you back. There's an idiot in the other
stall who keeps answering all my questions!!!"

Bush To Propose New Immigration Policy
Reuters | Latest Financial News / Full News Coverage

Hoping to attract more Hispanic support for his re-election bid, President Bush on Wednesday will resurrect a plan to help millions of immigrants work legally in the United States, officials said.

The officials said the plan would seek to allow immigrants to enter the United States legally if jobs were waiting for them and would also include a way for some undocumented workers already in the country to move toward legal status.

"The president believes that America should be a welcoming society," he said. "We are a nation of immigrants, and our nation is better for it."

Will have to wait and see how Indian Immegrants are going to get affected with this new law. Indians are eating into the highly paid jobs of American Society. Hispanics usually cater to the low end job in the society.

Historial Australia Vs India - Steve Waugh Retires
Indians hold heads high; Waugh bids adieu - The Times of India

India might have retained the Gavaskar-Border Trophy after the draw at Sydney but Australia stole the show on the final day by taking the fight to the Indian camp.

The Australian skipper Steve Waugh signed off his Test career with a dogged 80 with the Aussies, chasing 443 to win, finishing with 357/6. Simon Katich who slammed his maiden Test century in the first innings was undefeated on 77 from just 96 deliveries.

For India, the series has been one of their best ever overseas. After the rather pathetic performance against the Kiwis in their own backyard, not much was expected from the Indians on their tour Down Under.

But Ganguly and his men answered their critics in the best way possible by playing excellent cricket and catching the awesome Aussies on the backfoot.

H1-B pay: are you being shortchanged? - The Economic Times

Are you an electrical or electronic engineering post-grad under 30, working on an H1-B visa in the US and getting paid less than $66,500? Dude, you’ve got a real bad deal. Over 30 and earning less than $77,000? Oh boy, you too.

Oh, you’re a systems analyst or computer programmer, under 30 and a college grad, but earning less than $54,500 ($5,000 more for post-grads)? Your paycheck sucks, too. And if you’re over 30, make that doesn’t-suck threshold $60,000 for grads and $65,000 for post-grads. And even so, you’ve got a bad deal.

So what’s all this about? Simple: if you work on an H1-B visa in the US, or are planning to get that status anytime soon, here are some salary benchmarks you should be aware of.

Who need peace with Pakistan Anyway?
NDTV - Columns

Take the giant market. Yes, India and Pakistan together would have a market of 1.2 billion people. But a billion of those are already there in the Indian market. Adding an extra couple of hundred millions is neither here nor there.

And defence? Yes, India spends a lot of money on defence, much of it aimed at Pakistan. But would the defence budget really shrink if Pakistan was a friend and ally instead of a permanent enemy? Perhaps not.

There are a number of other threats, and in any case, a nation purporting to great power status would need to maintain a certain military strength.

The real impediments to India's economic growth are probably internal, and the remedies are also internal. For decades, progress was held back by bizarre economic policies like licensing.

Liberalization has freed the Indian economy to realize its full potential, but only partially - there are still crucial pieces of reform that must be pushed through. If the government gets its act together, India would be one of the best performing economies in the world, Pakistan or no Pakistan.

There are essentially three ways in which Pakistan can hold India back. The first would be if there were an actual war. Then all bets would be off, especially if the war turned nuclear, and there is a good chance that it could.

As India tries to stride forward to reclaim its status as a global power, the hyphenated relationship with Pakistan is a giant ball and chain tied around its feet, restricting the nation's role and aspirations to a purely South Asian stage.

In the pre-September 11 period, India had almost succeeded in snapping the hyphenation, but unfortunately it has crept back, and largely because of all the talk of war between the two countries.

If we are to rise to our full global potential, we would need to first snap the hyphenation in our own minds. We need to stop constantly looking over our shoulders at Pakistan and realize that we can mitigate much of the ill effects of Pakistani hostility if we simply set our own house in order.

For Pakistan the challenge is far more complex. India can, and does, flourish even in the absence of peace on the subcontinent. Pakistan will find it hard to do so. And that's why it is for Pakistan to figure out how it can make peace.

You can call that fair, or you can call that unfair. But that's the way it is.

Vajpayee VS Mushraff
The Pioneer >Vajpayee VS Mushraff

In the midst of a new warmth in Indo-Pak ties, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Monday met President Pervez Musharraf for over an hour, their first formal interaction over two years after the failed Agra Summit in 2001.

The much-talked about meeting was held at the Presidential palace (Aiwan-e-Sadr), where Musharraf welcomed Vajpayee with a characteristic firm handshake and the two exchanged pleasantries before they held discussions in what was described as a "courtesy call".

Both Vajpayee and Musharraf, who came face to face Sunday night at the banquet hosted by the Pakistani President, looked relaxed and smiling in between their initial remarks.

Vajpayee was accompanied by External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha, National security advisor Brajesh Mishra, Foreign secretary Shashank and Indian High Commissioner Shivshankar Menon.

Lady Docs - Sexually Harassed

Bihar's lady docs a harassed lot - The Times of India

"After a long wait, I got a job in the health department. After a few months, I got an 'invitation' to attend the birthday party of my boss' son. When I reached his house, I was surprised to find no sign of any party there. My boss was alone in the house. He made it clear if I wanted a favourable evaluation of my performance, I would have to accept his sexual advances. I was angry and frightened, but what could I do? He was so powerful and had full control over my career."

There is a need for another Nisha Sharma who rebelled against dowry, Reka Maximovitch who filed a case against Phaneesh Murthy, to rebel against these sexually harassing bastards. When are the men in India going to grow up and recognize that the women are not sexual objects, but human beings and when women in India are going to grow up and get assertive in their rights.

Will Vajpayee be able to fire that silver bullet of Indo/Pak Friendship?
Indian and Pakistan PMs hold talks - JAN 5, 2004

Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee held his first direct talks with his Pakistani counterpart yesterday since the two countries nearly went to war two years ago.

Their talks set the stage for a much-anticipated meeting with Pakistan's top power broker, President Pervez Musharraf.

The talks on the sidelines of a South Asian summit fed high hopes of improved relations between the nuclear-armed rivals.

Mr Vajpayee and Pakistani Prime Minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali wasted no time after the formal opening session of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) summit in meeting in a room at the Jinnah Convention Centre for 30 minutes, including 15 minutes of one-on-one talks.

That meeting is to be followed up with a more important encounter between Mr Vajpayee and General Musharraf, which is likely to be held today.

Mr Vajpayee and Gen Musharraf last met at a failed summit in Agra in July 2001.

IIT or IIM at Rs 6,000 a year? - Heights of Screwing the system
IIT or IIM at Rs 6,000 a year?

The World's best education could soon get cheaper. The Union HRD Ministry is considering a report recommending drastic cuts in the tuition fee charged by state-run technical institutions, including the prestigious IIMs and IITs.

The report, submitted recently, suggests a maximum tuition fee of Rs 6,000 a year, which is several times less than the existing rates. A year at IIM Ahmedabad, for instance, costs over Rs 1.50 lakh, and around Rs 70,000 at IIT Kanpur.

The committee headed by former Indian Space Research Organisation chairman U.R. Rao was set up in November 2002, to look into the state of technical education in the country.

Said a ministry source, "We are seriously considering all aspects of the report. A decision is expected soon."

In arriving at its recommended figure of Rs 6,000, the committee looked at fees charged by American universities such as Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley and California IT, in regard to that country's per capita GNP.

The committee concluded: "Even the higher figure (fee in American universities) is barely 30 per cent of the nation's per capita GNP."

Therefore, "if India were to encourage technical education as well as the US does, and make such education as affordable as it is for American citizens, fees in technical institutions should also be pegged to 30 per cent of India's per capita income, or Rs 6,000 per year."

In telugu there is a saying - 'PULINI CHUSI NAKKA VATA PETTUKUNNATLU - A FOX SAW A TIGER AND WANTED STRIPES LIKE THAT AND SHE BURNED SKIN TO GET STRIPES'. Its like that.

Why the heck, you want to reduce prices? Now IIT's and IIM's are doing good, giving out good results and world class professionals. If you want, reduce/abolish the application fee for the examination and make sure that the poor also be able to afford taking the test. Select the best guys out there and provide them with 100% education loans, rope in the banks for that and promote the concept. That will give a huge impetus for the students, and as they are going to have financial obligation, they are going to put all their efforts to come out with flying colors, there should be financial obligation on the students also, else they would screw up their education, its a fact.

Now the educational institutions have to depend on the govt. for funds, we know how bad the govt. funding is going to me, are we trying to roll back to the Nehruvian socialistic policies? Give me a break! Rope in copporates to provide scholorahips and internships and thus get the right environment into the institutions.

Use the money to make sure that the primary education is affordable, employ more teachers at the grass root level, we don't need subsidies for higher education, we need financial assistance for students in the form of loans and scholarships, but we surely need more money at the grass root level education which will help millions of indian kids to realize their dream/right for education.

Another gross example of stupid policies by govt.

This seems to be a part of a concentrated effort by the HRD ministry to gain complete control over IITs and IIMs and abolish their autonomy.

When the government cant ensure proper functioning of its umpteen departments, it basically has no right to go around meddling with things that not only function properly but also bring us renown.

As you mentioned, if government is so concerned about this excellent education system being accessible to all, then it should ensure availability of loans for such people.

I too had some thoughtson this which I have posted on my blog: http://sumitdhar.blogspot.com/

Cheers,

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the comment, i really appreciate that.

To say the least the comment of Ramdhan Yadav is very stupid. One should remember that the IIT fees were only Rs 200 sometime back and yet many of the IIT professors who are still in some of the IITs never joined IIT as they could study with much lesser fee in other engineering colleges. IIM fees were Rs 2.5lakhs and then came down to Rs 1.5 lakh and now to Rs 30000. If the investment is made for an IIM on commercial basis by a private firm, they have to charge about Rs 6 lakh fees per annum to break even. At that rate, we can safely assume that the Government is incurring a subsidy of Rs. 4.5 lakh on each student when a student pays Rs. 1.5 as annual fee. So the discussion should be on how much the govenment should subsidise and now the question of reduction of fees.

I am of the view that the govenment should totally get out of the education scene. But the nation requires a certain number of managers and with this view institutions like IITs and IIMs were established. Unfortunately India lost around $ 500 billion so far due to the outflow of talents from the IITs alone. I have not seen a single IIT graduate even applying for a job even to an establishment like BARC when I was a selection committee member in 1974.
One can see that the IIMs or IITs hardly contribute managers for running the government and we end up getting the last rung in this catogory.

Mr.Krishna,

I agree with your opinion that lot of IIT/IIM grads have caused brain drain. But that was during the period when the Indian economy is in the lines of Nehruvian Economy. Now the situation is changing, the same brain drain that happened for decades is slowly but gradually bringing the much awaited fruits back to India and you can actually see the 'Feel Good' attitude. For the first time after India got Independence highly educated Indians are feeling proud to be Indians, having hope that they can make a better tomorrow, making the mark in the world and world is turning to India. The contribution of Indian brain drain to the world technology/economy, is making the whole world industry turn to India and set up their R&D facilities and high tech products production in India. In the world if anybody has to make a choice between China and India regarding their production, they turn to China for cheap products and turn to India for hitech products. Isn't it a gift of the IIT's and IIM's to India which is an intangible/tabgible result of the high standards.

I was not even born in 1974, so I don't know the situation of India then, but for sure we 'The Young Dynamic Generation' of India are putting every effort to change the face of India in the whole world. Ofcourse we recoginze that your generation has laid the foundation for our achivements.

Now govt. is trying to take over the higher education when actually it should free the higher education from govt. clutches, and actually fund departments that make sure that the higher educations institutions stringently implement the highest standards and become world class institutions. And they should tie up banking system to the education system and generously grant loans for education so that students will not be deprived of funds. Education is changing and will change the face of India.

We are the future of India and we want govt. not to mess it up. And we want govt. to put efforts in giving a much better next generation by putting funds in grass root education and help children of India dream BIG. I am sure you should be reading what our Hon. President Of India Dr. Abdul Kalam keeps telling kids, LEARN TO DREAM. That is where govt. has to put it effors and money.

Some comments which was written last year when there was a report of a suicide of a student in Bombay IIT because of the stress is posted below. These are comments on the IIT.

Highly qualified teaching staff who does not know teaching, and poor facilities and extreme overload, classes from morning till late in the night, compulsory NSS, NCC, sports activities etc, very poor accommodation, low quality food etc add to this stress. A short stay in IIT Madras, last year was an eye opener.
About 500 girl students stay in a hostel called Sharavati which has no live in female warden, but a visiting male warden who makes an occasional visit. The blaring public address system for calling the students to the reception area, disturb the atmosphere throughout the day. The number of inmates in this hostel goes up to 700 for short periods when some cultural programmes are conducted in IITM and many students have to sleep on the floor. This hostel was constructed with a Rs 4 crore donation by an ex student Jai Shree and opened on July 6, 2001. Even though it is a very recent construction, all the toilet drains are seen outside the building and not run through a pipe chase which is the norm of a good design. Instead of a long open construction to provide maximum ventilation in the sultry Chennai, the four story building is a four row enclosed type, which limits the cross ventilation and raises the inside temperatures by 3 to 4 degree centigrade. Every wall in the building has some long cracks. The book shelves provided for the students are looking as though it was bought from a scrap yard. It is clear that someone made money out of the building construction. With the frequent power failure living inside those small rooms in which up to 3 are packed is not comfortable. When I saw this hostel last year it didn?t have water heaters for the bathrooms, and not provided with even a single water cooler. There were no internet facility in the rooms, and not a single washing machine for washing clothes. The children bring the cloth to Hyderabad for washing, while coming on a two or three day holidays. Food given in the Mega Mess-I which caters to some four hostels, in which I had taken food for a few days, was worse than the food in the cheap Udupi restaurants in Mumbai and contains no fresh vegetables or proteins. Once in a week chicken is present in the non-veg menu at extra cost, but it is colored with carcinogenic artificial color. In 2002 there was a breakout of Cholera in one of the hostel and this year there were worms in the food in another hostel. Just 15 computers for the students in the library and internet surfing is a difficult issue for the students. Projects are dumped on students without proper guidance, and children have to get help from parents to complete it. Workshops have very old tools and students are not provided with protective gear.

Added to this, IITs being government establishments have developed deep roots and does not consider the students as their customers. I observed that the students cannot sit in the chairs in the open air theatre, but have to sit on the cement steps and many first year students and their parents were unceremoniously moved out of the chairs, midway though the weekly film shows. The chairs are reserved only for the staff and their families who are not expected to use the student facilities. In one NIT where I was teaching, in the late sixties, the staff is not even invited for the weekly movies conducted and paid by the students. . In IITM, staff and their families have become the customers of the institution instead of the students.

Many present IIT professors started their career in the teaching profession like me and were attending other interviews along with me to get out of the non exciting non paying teaching profession of the sixties, but got stuck in teaching profession. The senior-most faculty receives less than $ 700 a month, while 35 percent of the extra revenue they earn from consultancy projects goes to the IITs. It is a fact that many of them conduct IIT entrance coaching classes to earn some extra money. Outside India, they could earn four to twelve times this amount. So IITs are having trouble in finding qualified candidates to fill the void left by retiring faculty throughout its branches in Delhi, Bombay, Madras, and elsewhere. Added to this the student population has increased 45 percent in the last eight years. If one asks any student they will tell you that the available highly qualified research oriented faculty tends to be very poor in teaching. This results in added stress to the students in the IITs. According to a McKinsey study the number of patents the typical IIT was granted in 1996-97 fell way behind those of Stanford Engineering and MIT Engineering, as did the number of faculty citations received for 1993-98
IIT does not fit with India?s developments. When Nehru inaugurated the IIT Kharagpur in 1953 it was hoped that IITs would aid India?s development but it ended up enriching the global economy using our capital investment and other resources including efforts of parents, which could be more than $500 billion. Grants to IITs have shown a five-fold increase from Rs.51.75 crore in 1997-98, to Rs.224.75 crore during 2002-03. Non-plan funding also more than doubled from Rs.172.76 crore to Rs.449.02 crore during the same period. All this goes to the benefit of the west. Last January some 25000 alumni of the IITians celebrated the 50th anniversary of their alma mater in Silicon Valley. Naturally Bill Gates, in his keynote speech said that IITs are incredible institutions and also that the US computer industry has benefited greatly. Not a single IITian had come for selection interview in the seventies when I was a member of one of the selection committees at BARC. We are training our best brains for the benefit of US and other developed countries. We should remember that the placement itself from IIT is just 50%. This is reflected in many IITians writing for IPS, IAS etc. The total unreserved seats from all IITs put together for the Communication and Electrical engineering subject, which is the most sought after is just 27 seats. All are trying for a seat in any branch, is only for an IIT label which is a meal ticket to go abroad. I had seen that all want to escape the misery called India and I can?t blame them as I was also one who left this misery after a dozen years in low paid Class I service in BARC.
We have to keep the IIT brand alive, which has done India proud abroad, but the fact is IITs are assest stripping government establishment which is useful for the Western Nations. IIT is another form of stamp paper scam that is eating in to our national resource. It is time to privatize it. All those who study in the IIT should be made to pay a reasonable fee and we should not worry as to where they go. IITs were never useful for our nuclear programme, space programme or agricultural programme and yet India has progressed to such an extent that even US is now looking for outsourcing research in these fields to India. .

Invention VS Innovation
Dean Kamen's Interview

Most recently renowned for the Segway Human Transporter, Dean Kamen holds more than 150 patents on such other revolutionary inventions as a shoebox-sized dialysis machine, a stair climbing wheelchair called the IBOT Mobility System and his "Project Slingshot," a water purification system that was named a runner-up for "coolest invention of 2003" by Time magazine.

The founder and president of DEKA Research & Development Corporation, Kamen is a tireless advocate for science and the need to bring first-world technology to the third world. Chief Gartner Fellow and group vice president Daryl Plummer spoke with Mr. Kamen in his New Hampshire office about the differences between invention and innovation, and Kamen's dream of changing the world.

Kamen's very interesting comment of Invention Vs Innovation.

I remember when the first Pong game came out. People were glued to their sets doing this eye-hand coordination, watching this thing go up and back. I'll call that a video game.

The fact is, it was a crude box, a crude little puck, and it kept you mesmerized for hours and you probably did it with a few thousand bytes of RAM. Today, we go from hundreds of megabytes to gigabytes on a video game that will have almost lifelike characters running around. But in reality, when you do the same eye-hand coordination exercise you did on Pong, instead of pushing the pong up and back with ever more realistic graphics - the mindless violence of this thing ripping the head off of that thing and squirting blood has no extra value in either making the game an eye-hand coordination challenge or amusing. It's not an innovation.

But suppose instead of multiplying the bandwidth by a hundred in the past five years, you left the bandwidth alone, and you figured out how to get the Internet to a hundred times as many people so the four billion people living in Africa and Asia and places where they have no access to information and knowledge, got access. That would be an innovation.

I think in some cases inventions prohibit innovation because we're so caught up in playing with the technology, we forget about the fact that it was supposed to be important.

Kamens comment on chaning the world:

We can't live anymore in a world which is based on stuff and not ideas. If you want to live with the world of stuff, we're all doomed. As we move towards 8 or 10 billion people on the planet, there's a little less gold per capita. And each one of us will continue to be fighting over an ever smaller percentage of total resources. Except it won't be just gold we're fighting over. It will be water and air. This is not a happy thought.

Now look at a different world. You have a good idea. He has a good idea. You give him your idea, and he gives you his idea. Now you have a world where a lot has changed. Each one of you had one idea. Now each one of you has two ideas. I know how to cure cancer. He knows a way to make an engine that doesn't pollute. She knows a way to grow food in sand. You put all the good ideas together, and everybody wins because everybody has more ideas.

This world is going to get uglier. We are not going to stop terrorists by taking away nail clippers from grandma at Hartsfield Airport. There are a few billion people out there looking through the window from the outside in, seeing what we have, and they have nothing to lose. We're not going to solve this problem by trying to keep them out. That's nonsense. The solution to this problem is to give people hope. Everybody has to be able to participate in a future that they want to live for. And that's what technology can do.

India 650/5 Woooooohoooooooooo
Welcome to SIFY News

Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman kindled hopes of a historic series win with a record-breaking 353-run partnership to put India firmly in the driver's seat in the decisive fourth cricket Test against Australia in Sydney on Saturday.

Tendulkar broke his lean patch with a magnificent unbeaten 220 and Laxman struck a classy 178 as the duo plundered runs at will during their marathon association to put India at a commanding 650 for five at close on the second day.

The Indian maestro gaves glimpses of his vintage batsmanship to not only record his 32nd Test century but also throw a dampener on Steve Waugh's farewell party as the world champions struggled to stem the run deluge.

Parthiv Patel (45) was giving Tendulkar company at stumps on a highly productive day for the visitors which saw a number of records fall by the wayside.

The Indians rattled up 366 runs, one of the highest totals in a day, to ensure themselves against a defeat and there by strengthening the chances of retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Tendulkar's long-anticipated century, coming after a gap of 14 months, has now ranked him in the second position in the list of century makers alongwith Steve Waugh with Sunil Gavaskar (34) being the only player ahead of him.

A-I's welcome message: 'You bloody Indians'
Welcome to SIFY News

Thirty Four-year-old businessman Firoz Rahman had not expected this from an Air-India official — to be insulted "You bloody Indians!" at A-I’s counter in Riyadh airport on December 23, according to a report published in The Indian Express.

Rahman also alleged the Sudanese employee shoved him. He was to fly to Mumbai from Riyadh on December 22 by flight AI 0822, which was cancelled. The next day, he went to the airport for a boarding pass for the next flight. "There were about 10 passengers ahead of me. I noticed that not all were given boarding passes. Most were told to wait."

The report said Rahman went to the counter to ask if he could get a boarding pass, but the official 'a Sudanese' allegedly flared up. "He shouted ‘go away or I’ll kick you out’," Rahman alleged. "I asked him if this was the way to talk." On this, the official pulled him by the collar and dragged him to airport security. The security officer pacified the duo and Rahman got back to his queue.

"He (the Sudanese) then saw my luggage and started kicking it," alleged Rahman. "I questioned him only to hear him yell, ‘You bloody Indians!’ Then he began swearing in Arabic and was about to hit me." Another Arab employee intervened and pacified him.

Rahman said he wanted to lodge a complaint, but other A-I staff told him not to complain. The A-I duty supervisor, however, told him to file a complaint. Though airline staff were not wearing name badges, Rahman said the Sudanese told him to "go ahead and complain. My name is Adam."

This is a blatant case of poor people management by A-I and also an indication of the the worlds frustration at the succees of Indians. A-I, you have to take the responsibility for this incident, i would bet if its any other air carrier, the Adam would be kicked out and mugged in jail by this time.

ITC Bridging Digital Divide via EChoupals
Via Rajesh Jain ITC's eChoupals

NYTimes writes about ITC's eChoupal project and how it is helping Indian farmers link globally:

E-choupal allows the farmers to check both futures prices across the globe and local prices before going to market. It gives them access to local weather conditions, soil-testing techniques and other expert knowledge that will increase their productivity.

Nonprofit organizations have tried similar initiatives but none have achieved anywhere near the scale that e-choupals have. There are now 1,700 in this state, Madhya Pradesh, and 3,000 total in India. They are serving 18,000 villages, reaching up to 1.8 million farmers.

As a result, say those who have studied the concept, the company behind e-choupals, ITC Ltd., has done as much as anyone to bridge India's vast digital divide: most of its one billion people have no access to the technology developed by some of their fellow Indians, whether in Bangalore or Silicon Valley.

E-choupals may offer a model for all developing countries.

"It is a new form of liberation," C. K. Prahalad, who led a case study on e-choupals for the University of Michigan Business School, said of the transparency and access to information they give farmers.

More than two-thirds of India's people still depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. With little chance of the huge manufacturing boom that has employed many rural poor in China, the challenge is to increase farmers' productivity.

Even more tantalizing, ITC now has the means to reach into some of India's 600,000 villages, where 72 percent of the people live and where the greatest potential markets lie. Most businesses never venture to an area with fewer than 5,000 people, said ITC's chairman, Y. C. Deveshwar.

Eventually the company expects to sell everything from microcredit to tractors via e-choupals — and hopes to use them to become the Wal-Mart of India, Mr. Deveshwar told shareholders this year.

"We are laying infrastructure in a sense," Mr. Deveshwar said. Sixty companies have already taken part in a pilot project to sell services and goods, from insurance to seeds to motorbikes to biscuits, through ITC.

E-choupals also provide information that will increase farmers' productivity and income. An Indian soybean farmer is one-third as productive as an American one, said David Upton, co-author of a case study of e-choupals for Harvard Business School.

Raising farmer incomes was an important goal. S. Shivakumar, 43, the head of the company's international business division and the originator of e-choupals, said he had long been frustrated by how a lack of opportunity limited the ambitions and achievements of Indian farmers.

"This has been a clear commercial initiative with social good in mind," he said.

IS GANDHI WRONG ABOUT GRAM SWARAJ?
A MUST READ ARTICLE by Atanu Dey writes on Panchayat Raj

Panchayat raj was to be the bedrock upon which India's democracy was to be grounded according to Gandhi. I am sure that he did know rural India. Did he know that rural India was stupifyingly superstitious, ignorant, uneducated, poor and petty-minded, misogynistic, and myopic? Those aren't the best grounds upon which the tree of democracy can flower, are they?

Wonderful 2003
I just woke up and lying lazily in couch, and thinking you know that right, well about 2003 and what a wonderful year it was and thought I should write about it and here you go I am here writing.

I had some Major Accomplishmennts. It gave me a chance to get myself make a very strong note at Cingular, actually produced poduct that the top management of the company apreciated it soo much that they called it as the star product of the company after a long long time, time to celebrate.

I was volunteered as Education Director for JavaMug and it was a wonderful experience, I wish I could have contributed more, but I had too many things going on and so was not able to contribute towards the end of the year.

Started knowing about Wbelogs and got influenced by Rajesh Jains and thats it a new phase in my life started. I had chance to meet Rajesh and Atanu during my trip to India and I am gladly invloved in the mission of Rajesh vision of taking technology to SME's and Rural India. I had a wonderful trip to India, the best one after I came outsite of India. Narayana Naik, DC Ramanjaneeyulu and GVVS Prasad got married and it was a blast. And had a very good time with Mom and DAD and it was good that it was raining when I was India and I can stay home and do not have to go any where.

One fine evening Sid opened my eyes to a reality of being able to earn 100 K USD in 2 years. That reality openedup so many new doors which I was blind to thinking in terms of millions, lol. Thinking BIG is good, but thinking realistically in short term is equally important.

I had chance to know some wonderful people like Anu, Laura,Vallabhi, Shruti, Seema, Lia, Kalpu and got more wonderful friends here in dallas.
