The Mangalorean community
in the US witnessed the wedding recently of Dr.Arema Pereira
to Rodney George. The bride was given away by a beaming
father - Dr Manohar Pereira and a demure mother - Penelope,
at a beautiful ceremony on September 18, 2005 solemnised
at the Columbia University Church in Manhattan, New York.
Church Readings were by cousin Sonal Pereira
(Global Marketing Manager at GE’s Global Finance,
Stamford) and brother Robin George from Muscat. Rendition
of the psalm, by best-man Aaron with the tinkle of lilting
piano in the background. The highlight of the touching ceremony
with excellent selection of readings and hymns, was the
musical quartet on piano and violins, supporting the stunning
soloist who constituted the entire choir. Stupendous!
Rodney is a Financial Advisor with Atlas
Financial Services in New York. Arema, an alumni of St John’s
Medical College (of Bangalore), is currently a Research
Assistant in Nephrology at the world famous TUFTS university-New
England Medical Centre in Boston Massachusettes - recognized
by the Carnegie Foundation as a "Doctoral/Research
Extensive" institution based on the breadth of basic
and clinical research conducted.
The church ceremony was followed by a Reception
cum lunch at the Tavern on the Green - the exclusive entertainment
resort of kings and queens and the celebrity world of actors
and actresses, within the Central Park in New York city.
Flowing wine and champagne and exuberant bonhomie kept the
spirits high, in the run up to the sit down lunch and formal
reception amidst exquisite floral décor in the backdrop
of mirrored crystal and over drop of humongous blue crystal
chandeliers.
The bride and the groom were toasted by
Dr. Brian Pereira of Tufts-NEMC, Sunny from Canada, the
bride’s brother Aaron from Notre Dame University….
and cousin Indira Pereira (of the multi-national Enterprise,
at Milford) whose good offices were credited for bringing
the couple together.
Not in a long time has one come across
such a meticulously planned event. On everyone’s lips
was just one refrain: What an enjoyable wedding! In actual
fact, what was enthralling was that so much family from
all over - India, the Gulf, the UK, Canada and all the Americas,
took pains to make it for the wedding by either flying in
or driving in. There was this grand family feeling pervading,
that every one was euphoric and nothing could be better!
Dr. Manohar Pereira of Muscat in the Sultanate
of Oman – himself an alumni of St John’s from
its first batch, is the son of the late Ligoury Pereira
and the late Stella Pereira (nee D’Souza), and belongs
to the Bajpe Kuntala-kambla Pereirakamath family. Penelope,
the bride’s mother, is the daughter of the late Michael
Vaz and Eva Vaz (nee Pereira) – the latter a former
Minister in the Karnataka Cabinet.
